semi finals are on tonight!
Why are only Coquitlam games described?
Cause the scout (dad) is the only one at this bad tournament
Coquitlam has volunteers that have worked very hard for years and a very supportive parent group. They try to share basic info to anyone that may be interested. Happy New Year Fellow Hockey Fans. Best of 2013 to you all.
I'm the writer of 11:56. I didn't mean this to sound like a criticism of Coquitlam, who has an excellent team, but an inquiry about why other teams are not described. Sorry if there was any misinterpretations.
Nice to see the kids from PG finish 3rd.
can i get a "way to go OHA"? and before you start with the fact they dont "manhandle" teams look at this:
BWC
2012-12-10 versus Coquitlam 4-1 Win
2012-12-13 vesrus Richmond 4-0 Win
2012-12-20 versus Richmond 3-0 Win
2012-12-23 versus Vancouver 5-0 Win
NSWC
2012-11-22 Versus Surrey 5-2
2012 versus langley 2-1
2012 versus Coquitlam 4-2
not exactly blowing away teams that are good teams but not great teams.
OHA has beaten BWC once in their only head to head. they've beaten POE twice in their only two games they've played each other. They were finalists in Chilliwack, Champions in Victoria, Champions in Burnaby.
time to give them their due. they are a very good team who like BWC and NSWC will win most times but can be beaten by an equally talented team on any given day. St. Albert will be a good test not just for OHA but for all the top teams. unquestionably the toughest tournament of the year.
At the Burnaby Christmas tournament final, Malynsten made another near neck breaking hit on Gingras sending both out of the game. Gingras because of injury and Malyensten because of a check from behind, again! Every tournament it seems the same guys have these checks from behind. Very careless and undisciplined!!!! When are they going to give these habitual offenders a penalty worthy of the infraction committed? Who knows but I hope it doesn't take a kid in a wheelchair! to get action!!

Way to go OHA, another Tier 2 tournament win to keep the parents happy.
Credit is due when it's earned. Playing in these tournaments do not make you worthy. Your measuring stick will be St. Albert. My bet is you should get ready for some humble pie!!!
Another disappointing finish from Malm of Langley. Didn't stick out at all.
Saw some great goal-tending from Burnaby's Tavin Grant let in only 5 goals in 4 games.
Agree with 1257.
The hits are dangerous and most of the time high.
Who cares bout Chilliwack, NSWC did beat OHA.
This was a great tournament and well organized. Thank you Burnaby and congrats to all the teams that placed and to all the players who received awards. A lot of hard work on and off the ice is required to throw these events and I'm proud to have been apart of it. Too bad it always ends With some harsh feeling and negative comments.
Very proud hockey mom. Happy new year!!
6:11
???? Malm missed the tournament due to an injury
6:11. Malm is injured and didn't play in the tournament. Were you even watching the games? Another hockey parent showing no credibility
No theyare not . Its not even close. They allowed more goals in this tourney then in the entire league play for bwc
Bwc 12 Games 4 goals
Stop comparing the Tier 2 tournament team to any winter clubs or POE.
stop trying to make it like the OHA is a team that is a powerhouse.they choose to play in very weak tournaments so parents can write how would.derful they are.
Props to PG great for that organization
There goalie was awasome. dis the oha parents watch what great goalie looks like
OHA will not get any respect until.they play in a real tournament against top 10 TEAMS. SORRY PARENTS
Not sure why my comments aren't being published but here are the players that stood out! Congrats to OHA and Langley for making it to the final...it was an entertaining game. Great job by Burnaby Minor Hockey to host a great tournament.
Beck Malenstyn OHA
Luke Gingras Langley Eagles
Nicholas Bizzutto Surrey Thunder
Paul Georgeopoulos Van T-Birds
Caleb Fantillo Coquitlam Chiefs
Cavin Tilsley South Delta Storm
Justin Bowering Coquitlam Chiefs
Matt Cahill Nanaimo Clippers
Blake Bargar Arizona Bobcats
Jake Garman Alaska Jr. Aces
Carson Bergstrom Arizona Bobcats
6:11. You must be one of the Langley haters, now you're trashing a child who didn't play a game. Shameful
Dear 6:11
Please do your homework before embarrassing yourself with a dumb, ill thought negative comment. Malm did not stand out because he did not play in the tournie. He is injured.
This is a great site for those who take time for intelligent comment. If all you want to do is unintelligibly slag 13-15 year olds please learn to excercise some self control; or at least be factual.
Dear 11:56 no worries - no offense intended or taken. Just thought I'd bring attention to the fact that factual feedback is always appreciated and anyone can provide it with a little effort. Twitter can be pretty cool when used productively.
who won the awards
6:14 you are right BBy's goalie is good specially against BWC. But without their d they ain't T1. Theyt only got 2 f that can handle the puck
Dropped in for a few games at the Burnaby Tournament to check out kids I'm following.
AZ Bobcats-A few new defencemen here to watch again
Langley-Gingras, OK-Gerth, don't see the interest here at all-Cholowski-Smooth skater small but steady.
OHA-Willms, still good goalie-Malenstyn, slipping and still overhyped.
Coquitlam-Fantillo, OK, solo player has no game sense.
Seafair-Sandu 99, good skills may be a future prospect but very small.
South Delta-Tilsley, continues to show well, smart, good skater/A+ work ethic.
Vancouver Thunderbirds-Lin 99, would be future prospect, not much else.
Surrey-Tallarico goalie, good prospect, technically excellent, if he grows will outshine everyone.
Kamloops-Johnson, OK, but not as good as I remembered
Richmond,Ridge Meadows,Prince George,Cowichan,Burnaby,AZ Firebirds-Can't see any top draft prospects here.
yeah who cares when OHA beats good teams... lets just throw those out and focus on what you want to focus on... by the way, when do you think you register for these tournaments?? beginning of the year!!! who was in the tournament last year? NSWC/BWC/ Cloverdale et al... OHA registered and was accepted. if other teams dropped out or didnt want to compete how is that an OHA problem? your logic is as stupid as me saying that BWC and NSWC are afraid to play OHA. stupid...! when we saw there were only a few top teams we were as disappointed as the rest but we registered and paid and comepeted and oh yea WE WON! you sat and ate turkey! Happy New Year.
This comment directed @ 12:57. Sorry to hear about Gingras getting injured, but he is probably one of the worst offenders of the "dirty check". Live by the sword, as they say. The ironic part, is that some WHL team will waste a draft pick on these kids. Too bad.

OHA has not played 1 team in the rankings since early October.
having 14 GA in one tournament, should turn a light bulb on somewhere in this organization. You are already trying trying to cover up with partial stats against BWC. BWC has allowed 11 goals and NSWC 26 in total for league play ( 20 games). In one Tier 2 tournament this OHA team has allowed 14. Say or spin it anyway you like, the Def and goal-tending for BWC has been very consistent. OHA goalies and defence are very questionable and allowed at least 8 weak goals in this tournament.
Why do you continue to compare your program to winterclubs, Why not Surrey, PG Coquitlam all of these teams are the ones who OHA continues to play in the same tournaments.
You only put up the stats per your liking, Where is the Semi, Burnaby,Langley shutouts on this one. Please do not compare this OHA to anyone. You pick and choose who you play against the entire season.
Do not blame the refs in St Albert or anyone else, but yourselves.
Tournament was run well. everyone thought OHA would walk away with this tournament, They barley go out of their with this one. So it was a good tournament. The OHA parents are a piece of work.
If we are talking draft prospects:
I watched every team in this tournament at least once and agree that the strength has moved to Alberta. Draft potential in this tournament was spread out between lots of teams.Top teams like OHA and AZ Bobcats seemed to have only 1 maybe 2 players that stood out and even lowly Tier 2 South Delta has 1 strong prospect. No need to spend any time fighting over which team is the best, none impressed me that much. Coaching varied greatly as it does at Bantam. WEHP's rankings are pretty good but a bit too much emphasis on the kids on the stronger teams. Must remember that there is no correlation between team strength and player draft potential.
Great site for info and chat.
We should all remember that this site is called "Western Elite Hockey Prospects". Not "Western Elite Hockey Teams".
It's about the players draft potential not how great the teams are!
No one really cares about team success but the parents.
January 1, 2013 7:03 PM
Your kids team must have done well!
Wonder how South Delta feels not even being allowed to make the play offs!
January 1, 2013 12:37 PM
Enough about OHA.
OK team.
Not too many draft picks.
Give it a rest.
Better kids on other teams in this tournament.

Fair comments. WEHP could you just only post info from more trusted scouts not hockey dads please.
January 1, 2013 12:37 PM
Well "way to go OHA"
Such detail on other teams.
Only a parent would care this much.
I guess we will all feel your sadness when only a couple of your great team is drafted.
We have all watched them play, enjoy it while it lasts.
January 1, 2013 6:14 PM
Thats because Burnaby was in the weakest pool!
If OHA is so good then why are they constantly praised for beating lower ranked teams. We all know that some of these kids are ranked too high. They won't do well at U16.
Hey january 1,2013 6:11 PM.Malm was injured and he didnt play.
The hit on Gingras was not even close to a hit from behind. I'm not tied in with OHA either. Gingras should have been kicked out of the game for the 7 dives he did. Hockey is a tough sport better get used to it if you want to play at the next level. No penalty point in the WHL
How did NSWC do in the Colorado AAA 98 SuperSeries on Dec.14-16? I see they only won 2 out of 5 games, did they have some humble pie?

what are you on about. The boy
never even played in the tournament.
Don't think malm was playing
Dear 11:23 -I'm not from any of these organizations but any Bantam minor hockey game I go to is attended by 99.9% friends and family. Are you going to put a roving reporter/scout on your personal payroll. This is a free site that you (and many) enjoy after all.So many hockey parents have such demanding expectations but when you drill into it probably no more than 10% of them do all the grunt work that makes it all work year after year. Good on you to those who make volunteerism work for kids in sport and look in the mirror if all you do is stand at the side and complain about things. It takes a lot more than a chequebook.
I read this site regularly and appreciate good balanced commentary for the information it provides.Cut out parents and you'll be left with very little to no content and a very vanilla, site. So long as the comments do not come from a Vancouver postal code - LOL! I find them generally pretty balanced , even then the fools are pretty easy to spot.
Keep up the great work WEHP and balanced, constructive hockey people - even if you are a parent!!
1) NSWC had to come from behind to tie the AZ Bobcats 1-1 in the Colorado SuperSeries two weeks ago
2) Langley beat the same AZ Bobcats in the quarterfinals of this tournament
3) OHA beat Langley twice at this tournament
I'm not sure why all the hate for OHA. Maybe it's parents jealous they can't afford to send their kids to an academy. They didn't have any dominating players until Malenstyn finally got going mid way through the week, but they still managed to win. I do agree they will probably have to be much better to get out of their pool in St. Albert. It'll be nice to put this OHA debate to bed after St. Albert and move on to more important things.
January 2, 2013 6:05 PM
How does any pick this guy Malenstyn to be a All star, He gets kicked out in one game and knocks a kid unconscious in another. He is no All star. 3rd round draft.
Sorry you are not the REF.
January 4, 2013 10:55 AM
Guess it's trash Malenstyn and Hannoun week.
Kids must have something to create such hostility.
Lets look at the facts:
Malenstyn - Tall, greedy and not a team player.
Hannoun - Very short, smart and family connections.
I say they are both good draft picks. Ha! Ha!
Where would you put your money?
OHA will have three forwards and four defenceman drafted. I've talked to enough scouts to know this is fact not fiction.
January 5, 2013 2:21 PM
It's a SHAME but you're probably right. Although the only OHA players who should be drafted are Malenstyn, Koch and Higson. The rest are way over hyped and there's plenty of better players on other teams. I guess to some a $30k investment is worth the exposure. Oh well...I guess I'm jealous!
In speaking with many scouts over the last couple of months I've come to realize that the interconnected web "who you know" differs no more than the politics in minor hockey. It's simply at a grander scale.
Maybe I simply don't know enough about hockey but this seems counter productive and not the most effective means of running a business. After all, isn't that what these scouts are supposed to do? Find the best components based on potential, productiveness, compatibility and adaptability to their current working environment.
Doing my own review of the past 5 years there seems to be a trend of scouts, coaches, and managers who spend ample time and effort trying to make something out a dud simply because they invested in them on draft day.
I don't mean to pick on OHA or any other academy or winter clubs but they are just larger showcases for what happens in many hockey associations throughout Canada. On most, not all, the kids that don't deserve the opportunities presented to them seem to get all the breaks. Case in point...COACHES KIDS!
The bantam draft (after the first 2 rounds) is no less political than the associations you're from so don't get too tied up in it.
2:21
I will bet you you my house that they won't have 3 kids drafted and most will be very late
January 4, 2013 2:22 PM
Tall with family connections is where I'd put my money!
January 6, 2013 4:22 PM
Interesting post but I would only pick Malenstyn for one of the lower rounds from OHA. Much better kids from elsewhere. Koch not on my radar.
Your house is probably mortgaged to the balls so don't bet what you don't own. They will have seven kids drafted and their all good players despite the commentary here. Malenstyn, Koch, Bowen up front and Higson, Khaira, Stevens and Rizzolo on defence. Maybe a goalie? What is your general problem with admitting they have good players? It has to be jealousy. Best form of flattery they say!
January 7, 2013 8:31 AM
Just love this thread. Very funny.
I'd bet if a kid is tall and has connections he's in.
They think they can teach him to skate-maybe. But game sense-no. Oh wait a minute we'll play him with the short smart kid-no that didn't work either. Umm! So we can't look like we made a mistake-put him on the PP. Oh wow he's hidden at last! Success! Er! Why did we draft this kid?
January 5, 2013 2:21 PM
I wonder which one of these 7 is yours.
This is just stupid, It would make this team a powerhouse which it is not. 1 forward 2 defence maybe.

Not surprised, we all know he's not to smart. But that never stopped anyone get drafted.
Jan 27 12:47
And you think there is 7 picks out of OHA? ... you gotta be kidding???? You have a better chance at winning the Lotto Max then having more than 3 kids drafted. I'll bet my house too and its mortgage free. One kid will be in the first couple rounds and the rest late picks. I guess promoting all these kids makes the parents feel like they're getting their moneys worth until reality hits in May. Whatever makes you feel better.
