AMBHL Playoffs - Round 1

ivvoq.jpg

Leduc 5 - Camrose Vikings 4   2OT
Leduc draw first blood in what should be a great series between a pair of teams where there was just 2 points separating them in the regular season.  The game would see a combined 92 shots and Leduc fired 35 at Camrose goalie Travis Child through two periods of play.  For Leduc, Tristan Starzynski was the 2OT hero scoring his 2nd of the game and also added 1 assist.  Justin Young had 1-2-3 and Matt Fonteyne had 0-2-2.  Goalie Brandon Kegler turned aside 37/41 shots for the win.  For Camrose, it was Curtis Miske figuring in on all 4 goals, going 2-2-4 which included a goal with just 30 seconds remaining to force OT.  D- Robbie Fulton had a tremendous game defensively for Camrose.  G - Travis Child stopped 46/51 in defeat.

Edmonton SSAC 3 - St. Albert 2
Another game that went to 2OT saw 98 born D- David Quennville score his 2nd goal of the game to win it for SSAC and gave them a 1-0 best of 5 series lead.  Quennville led all AMBHL defenceman in scoring this season.  Quinn Greenly added 3 assists while AMBHL scoring champion Giorgio Estephan chipped in with 2 assists.  Curtis Peck and Stephen wack replied for St. Albert who got a strong goaltending performance from Patrick Dea.

A little perspective on the Royals. They were 2-4 in the qualifying rounds in MH and St A. They were 3-2 in subsequent placement games for a total of 5-5. They gave up 32 goals in ten games for a 3.20 GAA. When they leave Calgary this is an average team. Don't want to dampen the hype but there hasn't been much success outside of Cowtown. Seafair and Prairie Storm both have beaten the Royals in tournament play and Semi has handled them twice in a row.

That is one of the most truly insigtful assessments of the Royals all season.

A little perspective on your note. Royals beat SSAC, Lloydminster, Sherwood Park and dominated Semi in shots/play in both one goal games. They outshot BWC and kept it close till less than 5 minutes in the 3rd (3-2) and gave a PP goal. Are the Royals the best team in Western Canada? No but they can play with anyone and win any given night vs. the best of them. They beat Seafair in RR in Victoria and lost to them in the Finals in OT when leading 3-1 with less than 6 minutes to go (good learning). They took Prairie Storm lightly but that's why the games are being played. There's no hype. Not the most skilled hockey team out there but you better be able to skate to have a chance vs. them. One of the top 3 teams defensively in Western Canada.
