Alberta Cup Schedule Announced

DATES AND LOCATIONS

The 2012 Alberta Cup is an open tryout for all male 1997 born athletes. Zone Selection Camps will take place March 30 - April 1, 2012. Locations and arenas are listed below.

Please ensure you review the Zone Boundaries before registering. Once registered you will receive a confirmation email and roughly one week prior to the zone camp you will receive an email from your respective Director of Operations containing additional camp information.

The registration fee for the zone camp is $125.00. This fee includes a team jersey and five on-ice sessions (two skill & three games).

Alberta Cup Zone Camps are selection camps and not evaluation camps. Players participating in zone camps will not receive an evaluation after the camp. Hockey Alberta does not have the resources to provide every player that attends with an evaluation.

Team selection will be facilitated by each zone teams Coach Mentor. The Coach Mentor will ensure that the Team Alberta selection process is being followed and that every player receives an equal opportunity to make the team. Selection will be based on what a player does over the selection weekend and not what the player has done during the season with his club team. Short term competition requires "performance on demand" and players need to show their skills over the weekend.

Zone Camp is open to players of all levels. Players will meet new friends, learn new drills, take part in team building activities, experience a high level selection camp, receive a jersey and five on-ice sessions.

Zone Camp Locations
Northwest Sharks - Spruce Grove - Tri-Leisure Centre
Northeast Flyers - Vegreville - Recreation Centre
Edmonton North Oilers - Edmonton - Bill Hunter Arena
Edmonton South Bruins - Edmonton - Bill Hunter Arena
Central Thrashers - Blackfalds - Multiplex
Calgary North Stars - Edge School - Kyle Stewart & Provident Arenas
Calgary South Flames - Edge School - Kyle Stewart & Provident Arenas
South Senators - Okotoks - Okotoks Recreation Centre

The 2012 Alberta Cup will take place April 26-29, 2012 at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge, Alberta. This will be the second consecutive year the event will be hosted in Lethbridge. In 2011, the Calgary South Flames won the championship after defeating the Northwest Sharks in a shootout while the event set a record financial profit netting more than $42,000. Proceeds from the 2012 Alberta Cup will once again go to benefit Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association, University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Alumni Association.

The 2012 Alberta Cup Host Committee is comprised of three groups; Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association, Lethbridge Hurricanes and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Alumni Association. Hockey Alberta is also proud to have the Western Hockey League, Reebok/CCM, Source for Sports and Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation as event sponsors.

The Alberta Cup is the premier event in the province that helps identify the top bantam-aged male players in Alberta.  It is well attended by scouts as they prepare for the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft. In addition to player evaluations, the competition is also an opportunity for administrators, coaches, trainers and referees to be evaluated for future positions with the Team Alberta U17 Program.

The Alberta Cup Program begins in March each year with close to 1000 players trying out at their respective zone camps. Each of the 160 athletes playing in the Alberta Cup is competing for one of eighty invites to the U16 Male Provincial Camp in July. The U16 Male Provincial Camp is the final stage in the first year of the Team Alberta Program.

Former Alberta Cup graduates include such players as Zach Boychuk, Jordan Eberle, Devan Dubnyk, Dany Heatley, Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, Scott Hartnell and Devin Setoguchi.
