As expected BWC, Cloverdale, Semiahmoo and NSWC have all advanced from the PCAHA Flight 1 and will now move on to the final 4.  Both top teams, BWC and Cloverdale marched through winning both games as BWC defeated Surrey and Cloverdale over Langley.  NSWC defeated Abbotsford but needed 3 games due to a tie in the race to 4 points in the series while Seafair earned a tie against Semiahmoo.

Final 4 Match-ups
BWC - Semiahmoo
Cloverdale - NSWC

British Columbia OMAHA
The league defending champs Kamloops Jardine Blazers have taken a 1-0 series lead over Kelowna with a 3-2 victory yesterday afternoon in Kelowna.  Maxwell James scored in 3OT to win it.  Kamloops can clinch today and move on to provincials.

Alberta AMBHL
The SSAC Southgate Lions have rolled through a pair of series so far in the ultra competitive Nitro North Division.  First, they defeated the 18-8-7 St. Albert Sabres and then won 2 straight as well against a hot Edmonton CAC squad.  The usual suspects have been red hot so far in the 4 games this playoffs with 98 born Tyler Benson leading the way with 1-11-12, Giorgio Estephan 6-5-11, Quinn Greenly 4-6-10 and 98 D- David Quennville with 3-6-9.  SSAC will now go on to face Lloydminster in the North final.

The Lloydminster Heat who are coming off a successful campaign to which they easily won the Charger North by 11 points have made the North Final.  They first disposed of western Canada Bantam Championship host Spruce Grove in 2 straight games, outscoring them 14-4.  Then they needed 3 games to beat out Leduc 2 games to 1.  Regular season scoring leader Andrew Koep has picked up where he left off by scoring 6-4-10 so far in 5 games, Zach Fischer and 98 D- Kale Clague each have 6 points.

The Calgary Bisons have silenced their nay-sayers in and around the AMBHL defeated the Calgary Bronks in 3 very hard fought games.  They then played the AMBHL regular season champs in the Calgary Royals and beat them in 2 straight.   The first game against the Royals was one in OT with a bounce off the backboards and off the goalie and in.  The story so far for the Bisons has to be 98 born Zach Phillips who leads the team so far with 5-3-8 in 5 games.  Braylon Shmyr has 8 points as well while Nick Merkley has just 3 points in 3 games.

Lastly, the Medicine Hat Hounds and Airdrie Xtreme are tied at 1-1 with the 3rd and deciding game to go this afternoon in Medicine Hat.  Mitch Hallas enters the game leading the Hounds with 10 points in 5 games while Chad Harrison has 6 points in 4 games for Airdrie.

Bisons have eliminated both the Bronks and Royals without Merkley! When he gets back from the two seperate injuries, WATCH OUT. He's a very important piece of this Bisons run. They have two scoring lines now and have settled down defensively as Thompson's stock continues to rise. Bisons will make the trip north but who they face is going to be the question.

Merkley has only played 2 games and half of a period

Ssac will come out of Alberta but I don't think Manitoba Saskatchewan or Alberta will be able to beat whoever comes out of bc. (bwc I'm guessing )

Gotta give credit to the Bisons for their showing thus far in the playoffs. I didn't think they'd get by the first round, but the emergence of that second line gives the opposition some difficult defensive matchups.

The biggest change for the Bisons has been the play of Thompson in goal. In the last game of the first series, the Bronks outshot Bisons 44 - 21, but still went down 3 - 1 and out of the series. When Merkley is not in the lineup, the other Bison's lines get more ice time and more opportunity to rise to the occasion.

Don't underrate the Extreme, they are improving and a dangerous team. Bison better be at the top of their game.

OHA closed out OMAHA season with a home and home with PG. OHA won all four games in lopsided fashion. POE finishes first and OHA second in OMAHA but both are not eligible for playoffs. Both will be at KIBIHT.

Winnipeg Monarchs are making a run

The Extreme are a team the Bisons didn't want to play(Airdrie or Med Hat). I'm sure the Bisons would have preferred the 3 hour drive than the 45 minute challenge that awaits them in Airdrie. Going to be a good series. If Burr stays healthy, look for an upset. When Merkley comes back ,he'll be hungry as he's only played in 2 (and a bit) games. Bisons have shortened their bench, ridden a hot goaltender and Extreme have improved their game...closer series than most would think. Up north, look for a lengthy series there.

people didn't think the xtreme would make it past the first round. Now their on fire!!!!

Thompson's been rock solid pretty much almost all season long. When the team was faltering, his numbers suffered but weren't indicative of his play, as there is only so much a goalie can do.

Agree with the others though, the emergence of the secondary scoring and the improvement in the Bison's defense, combined with Thompson's play have been key in the team's success so far - WITHOUT Merkley.

Once he's back, the Bisons will be even more of a threat. The Bisons need to focus on the upcoming series, as the Xtreme is a talented team who definitely have the potential of knocking them off if the Bison's don't take them seriously.

Just one question, all this about Thompson but Ternes basically got Airdrie through the first round and that last game he had 42 shot with a 1 goal allowed. This series will have to be very offensive to beat these guys, they both have been bringing their best and it will be tough to get by them. Very interesting series it will be.

How can you say the extreme are such a good team. The only reason they've made it this far is because of goaltending. Medicine hat outshot them 42-19 and airdrie goalie won them the game

Yes, Airdrie beat MH, by finding a way to shut down their top line in the last two games.... Don't forget that they got to that series by defeating Lethbridge. Bisons beat Royals and Bronks, both teams with more points in the regular season than MH who finished first in that very weak division. Ternes has a few good games. Maybe he can keep it going, but he was 500 in net on the season with a 3.39 goals against average. Not exactly the stats needed to win a championship!

what an upset in pa series. never saw that coming. i heard they had a coach change ?

looks like weyburn barely made it out of series. seen them in pa tourny. they were great. they worked hard and play well. size might catch up to them. they have some tenacious midsize and small players, but playoffs get harder. had the one real good kid and a couple decent guys playing with him. is that enough depth ?

Good to see two underdog teams like the Bisons vs Airdrie in the south finals! It show what happens when a team rides a hot goalie and a team comes together as a team and not individuals!
I can see from the stats Airdrie has finally figured out how to score some goals in the playoffs as their average per game is up 1 per game in the playoffs vs regular season play. They must of realied you cant win hockey games with just lines 2 lines. as their getting scoring from the whole team. If the Bisons just roll their 2 lines like early rounds they may fall short in a 5 game series.

So you are basing this on stats from a team that struggled through most of its season?

Airdrie has played the Bisons tough all year, I believe their head to head record was 1-1-1 in regular season with all games being tight. I think the Bisons will win, but it may be a longer series than most people are anticipating. Up North I think SSAC is starting to roll, shutting out a red hot CAC team is no joke. Lloyd will need a solid performance from one of their goalies to make this series long, something they haven't got all year.

Watched Seine River Snipers against Central Plains Saturday. I was cheering for Central, but Jonah Cook of Snipers looks ready for Junior though only a '98. He controls the game. He still doesn't match the speed of Nathan Wall of Central, who had a hatrick in the OT loss.

Weyburn is just fine. The playoffs are a completely different game and they are a big and tough team that has a perfect balance of size speed and grit. Last year they relied heavily on two stars and when those guys got shut down they fell apart and this year they have a two way star and a whole bunch of good players. They have three very good centremen and a hard working and tough group of wingers and easily the best defence in the province. No other defence is even close.

Anonymous said...

Who are the good defenceman. I have watched numerous Weyburn games this year, and they seem to be the most over rated D in the province.

Anonymous said...

They are the most overrated d in the province with the second least goals against among the 18 teams? What do you attribute the second least goals against in the province to?
