WEHP live at the Med Hat tournament game re-cap - Day 2

POE 3 - SSAC 1
Teams both came out ready to play with each trading chances in the first. It was SSAC getting on the board first on the power play. SSAC also did a great job killing off a big 4 minute penalty.

The second period was a different story with POE seeming to find another gear and controlled the majority of the pressure and chances in the second. Goaltender for SSAC Matthew Berlin played an excellent game keeping his team in the game during second period with a number of huge saves including two breakaway opportunities. It was not until the 3 minute mark that POE's Will Lawrence netted his first of the game with a very pretty play showing his great hands in tight to tie it up at one. Not long after POE was awarded a 5 on 3 power play in with Lawrence potted his second of the game to put POE up 2-1 after 2.

The third was similar to the second with the only pressure coming from SSAC was on a 4 minute power play. POE put the game away with an insurance goal from Austin Wellsby.  POE had the 37-24 shot advantage.

Players of the game were Will Lawrence of POE and Matthew Berlin of SSAC. Both players had very good games.

Semiahmoo 5 - Edmonton CAC 4
It was all Semiahmoo in the first period sustaining pressure, getting most of the quality scoring chances and taking a 4-1 lead into the first intermission including a short handed goal from Matt Bradley.

CAC held off the Semiahmoo attack in the second period and cut the lead in half on a 4 minute power play which was the lone goal in the second. Semiahmoo still maintained most of the attack.

Edmonton CAC came out strong and ready to play in the third and cutting the lead to 4-3 on a power play marker. Semiahmoo would receive a power play of their own however and it was John Wesley putting home his second of the game to restore some breathing room with a 5-3 lead. It was then CAC's Matt Dykstra putting away his second of the game to get his team back within one. CAC sustained pressure the last few minutes of the game looking for the equallizer with numerous chances but in the end it was Semiahmoo pulling out the 5-4 victory and claiming first play in their pool putting CAC at number 2 two. Semi out shot CAC 42-29.

Players of the game were Matt Bradley for Semi and goaltender Tyler Kwiatkowski for CAC.

John Wesley of Semi and Matt Dykstra of CAC both had great performances with two goals each.

I watched several of the games and the BC Teams have markedly superior skating and passing abilities. Alberta teams are all bigger and more physical but the new rules are not working for this strategy. BC teams had several smaller skilled players in their lineup and this strategy is paying dividends as players like Ronning and others are simply running around unimpeded. Welcome to the present where speed and skill trump size. The Medicine Hat Tigers figured this out a few years ago.

Congrats to BWC...first class showing from players through coaching staff...Barzal was Barzal when he played...vision second to none...Masellis much improved footwork and tough to play against...

Szeto was a dominant factor in every zone and situation...the kid is fast, smart, skilled and gritty...thought he was their best player
