WEHP live at the Med Hat tournament game re-cap

BWC Bruins 7 - Lloydminster Heat 6
The Lloydminster Heat and Burnaby WC provided a very entertaining opening game of the Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds tournament. Both clubs traded quality chances early and often from start to finish.

The Heat got on the board first with the first shot on goal of the game on the power play just a few minutes in. Burnaby would tie the game up mid way through the frame and teams went to the dressing knotted up at one goal a piece. The flood gates opened in the second period with each team scoring three goals a piece. The third period also brought a lot of action but it was Burnaby WC putting three goals in the back of the net while Lloydminster could only find the net twice allowing Burnaby to skate away with the 7-6 victory.

Leading the way for the Winter Club was #7 Ty Ronning and #91 Justin Szeto with two goals a piece. Szeto also picked up an assist on the night. Ronning's second goal came short handed and was the eventual game winner. For Lloydminster it was #9 Andrew Koep leading the way with a two goal performance. In goal Nick McBride picked up the win for the Winter Club and Tucker Cochrane was given the loss.
Stand out: Ty Ronning is a great little player. Fairly small is size but seems very solid on his skates. He is a great skater with good speed, has great vision on the ice and makes smart plays. Plays great on the power play as well.

I was expecting some big things from Mathew Barzal but did not have the greatest of games. At times was dominant with his speed and has great hands but overall did not stand out in the game.

NSWC Winterhawks 2 - St. Albert Sabres 1
NSWC and Saint Albert both played a great game. Each team came out fired up and traded good chances at both ends of the rink. Both goaltenders played a great game making some key saves and the teams went into the first intermission at no score. Saint Alberta out shot NSWC 14-9 after one. NSWC seemed to control a little more of the play in the second period and getting better quality scoring chances then Saint Albert. #12 Jansen Harkins got NSWC on the board in the second with the great shot from the slot placing the puck perfectly of the glove of Saint Albert's goaltender. NSWC received a power play late in the second period which carried over into the third. Forty seconds into the third on the power play #19 Dante Hannoun scored to put NSWC up 2-0. Saint Albert would cut the lead to half at the 8:49 mark of the third period but could not tie the game up in the end. NSWC wins this tight game 2-1. Although Saint Albert out shot NSWC 27-21, the quality chances came from NSWC.

Stand out: Captain of NSWC Jansen Harkins is a great player with good speed and hands. Picked up a goal and an assist. Willing to go into the corners and battle.

Also liked #17 Cal Babych. He is a big forward that plays very aggressive and takes the body well on opponent. Also has pretty good hands.

-We will be at the Kinplex this morning to catch 4 games and should have a report up this afternoon.

How has Mathew Barzal played overall this season? I know as of last month he's the projected number one draft pick for the WHL draft, but I was wondering if those comparisons to RNH are actually fair. Do his point totals come anywhere near to what Ryan had in his 2nd year of bantam? It'd be pretty cool if those comparisons are accurate, considering how Ryan's doing in the NHL and if Barzal can play to his potential, anything is possible and maybe he can be there one day!
