WEHP Announce Top 10 Team Rankings

WEHP are proud to announce this morning the Western Canada Top 10 Team Rankings.  The Rankings are based on team play, number of top prospects and strength of schedule.  League record is beside team name.

1.   Burnaby Winter Club Bruins (6-0-0  36GF - 3GA) - It is pretty hard to argue not having BWC at the top due to the fact they have posted wins over POE, Semiahmoo and Cloverdale.  Sure they lost in the Chilliwack final to NSWC 2-0 but they were without a couple key players including top 3 ranked Matt Barzal.  They are 6-0-0 in the PCAHA having outscored the opposition 36-3.

2.   Pursuit of Excellence (4-1-0  39GF - 6GA) - They have the top defense in all of western Canada in our opinion with 4 players who are assured of being selected in the 1st or 2nd round.  The offence can score, led by Kawaguchi and his 73 points in 19 games.  The league loss was a forfeit and the only other loss they had this year was to BWC.

3.   CAC Lehigh Cement (7-1-2  60GF - 36GA) - CAC feature two very good scoring lines with all 6 players averaging 1.5-2.0 ppg this season.  There only loss was against defensive minded Sherwood Park in which Klassen played well in goal for Sherwood Park.  CAC has been without there top 3 dmen for a large part of the year in Greer, Eisler and Hetherington.  When they hit full gear, they are as good as anyone.

4.   North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks (4-1-0  24GF - 7GA) - A very balanced team led by Babych, Harkins, Chernomaz, Dabb etc...Very similar team to CAC in that they have two very good lines.  The defense is solid and Burman is dependable in goal...Won the Chilliwack tournament over BWC 2-0.  Lost only league game to Semiahmoo 3-1.

5.   SSAC Soutgate Lions (8-1-1  67GF - 37GA) - After losing their first game of the season (4-3 to St. Albert), SSAC is on fire.  Led by one of, if not the best forward in western Canada in Giorgio Estephan and his 17-17-34 in 10 games and 98 born stars F- Tyler Benson, D- David Quennville, they will be tough to stop this year.  Quinn Greenly and Josh Hayward have added good secondary scoring.  Can the sub-par goaltending improve?

6.   Semiahmoo Ravens (4-1-1  22GF - 14GA) - Led by a capable offence with Bradley, Plotnikoff, Craighead and Regush - scoring isn't a problem.  The goaltending is as good as it gets with Quinton Paille.  The team lacks a bit in the puck moving defenseman and doesn't currently have a draft ranked dman.  Only league loss was 3-1 to BWC.  They also lost to NSWC in a big way in Chilliwack.

7.  Lloydminster Heat (7-2-1  48GF - 28GA) - A team with good balance and strong defensive play and good systems.  Strong defense led by 98 born top ranked player Kale Clague along with Coghill and Hilsendager.  The offence is led by Andrew Koep and  his 13-7-20 in 10 games thus far.  The Heat only losses have come to CAC and SSAC.

8.  Calgary Bisons (8-2-1  61GF - 38GA) - It really doesn't get much better in western Canada than the 1-2 punch of Nick Merkley and Braylon Shmyr who seemingly win games by themselves.  Although Merkley/Shmyr have scored half the teams goals...the defense has some strength with Lester, Eagletail and strong play of Brad Forrest.  Logan Thompson has been steady in goal.

9.   North East Wolfpack (7-0-0  46GF - 13GA) - A team with easily the best depth in Saskatchewan is just rolling through everyone so far in Saskatchewan and are the odds on favorite to go to westerns.  Elder, Seaman, Paziuk, Grambo and Zary lead the offence.  The defence has one of the better 97's in Bryce Fiske and Nik Amundrud in goal is garnering serious attention in Saskatchewan rinks.

10.  Calgary Royals (7-1-2  39GF - 18GA) - If  you want a team who is one of the darkhorses in all of western Canada, here it is.  This is the definition of a "team", no stars, no ego's and hard work.  They are built from the goal out with the best 1-2 punch or close to it in western Canada with Morrissey and Sawchenko.  Sawchenko has a .949 Save percentage and a 1.40 GAA.  Captain Cameron Anklewich leads the forward group.

Med-hat should tell alot about top teams for 1st half of yr

Without going to any of the big out of province tournaments Northeast Wolfpack will get destroyed worse than Prince Albert did last year at Westerns

4 of the top 6 from BC..Look for BC domination in the upcoming tourneys..Cloverdale should of likely made this top ten as well.

It will be interesting to see how Notre dame does in MedHat.Playing Midget AA cant hurt. Also noticed that POE has 6 forwards ave 2 points a game or better.Along with thier D,will be tough to beat.Im sure that tourny will settle alot of questions.

North East will have to make it to westerns first. And the players that keep getting mentioned over and over would have a tough time making any of the other top nine teams. Their D is weak. Not sure who is talking about them. And if the did play any tournaments out of province, they would be lucky to win a game.

Piling up points against weak teams doesn't mean much. Good teams and players will shine, against strong teams. Med-Hat will sort them out.

i realy agree when a team against the strong team. those top score player and top bc defenseman won't shine anymore.northshore should take over some high ranking team.

They have a very solid 3 line lineup with a few players that played AAA , also good defence with2 strong goalies. Come watch before spouting off at the mouth over something you know nothing about.

Lloyd lost to Sherwood Park. CAC lost to Sherwood Park. Sherwood Park tied St Albert and lost by 1 to SSAC. It may all come down to coaching.

Agree with 1:17PM - POE feasted on Peewee quality teams at the Prospects League - those points are like 'empty calories'... belch

POE does seem to have 4 to 5 powerful Ds and 2 to 3 forwards worth mentioning, and a line of pretty good 98 forwards. The rest are average, good AA and below. Their Ds are huge assetts, covering up the team's weakness up front.

BWC is probably the only decent team they have played so far. Will be interesting to see how they fare in Med Hat.

Cloverdale has been really good lately, tied Semiamhoo 2-2 a couple games ago, and beat Surrey yesterday, 6-0. They haven't been losing many games, even though two of their Key players are injured.

Really interested to see how BC teams do in Med Hat, 73 points in 19 games in ridiculous and the only way I see that happening is by playing a lot of really weak teams. I think these BC teams are good, but they have a lot of hype to live up to.

@ Nov 2, 8:27 pm. I totally agree. Sherwood park defiantly deserves a Place up there, and st albertbis close only because of their goaltending. That whole divison will be interesting to watch in the future.

BC parents (and I am one) need to get over themselves...it is embarrASSing...if you are raising your hockey sons in your likeness, then God help us all in BC....

Some are worse than others...if you have 3 letters representing your team then this really applies to some of you...especially if one of the letters is an O

prince albert did not get destroyed at westerns. they should have played some out of province aaa teams prior to westerns. if anything they got outcoached. prince albert had a very good first period against edmonton, bwc, and host team, but those coaches made necessary adjustments. prince albert were not able or did not make any adjustments. they were a very good team, 5 players drafted.

Has anyone noticed Jake Fletcher up front for semi? He seems like he could go high in the draft in my opinion.

PA had one good period, one period does not win hockey games. After the first all the other teams took over and dominated
