New Year's Eve Late.......

Saskatoon Tournament Day 1 re-cap

Division 1
Russell Rams 2-0-0
Saskatoon Outlaws 1-1-0
Swift Current Raiders 1-1-0
Tisdale Ramblers 0-2-0

As expected by many in attendance the Russell Rams are 2-0-0 having beat Saskatoon and Tisdale by a combined 18-7. Jayce Hawryluk has been an absolute force with a pair of 5 point games thus far to give him 5-5-10. Taylor and Travis Sanheim have also been a force for Russell, with Taylor having 4-3-7 and receiving MVP honours in the 2nd game. Rylee Zimmer is 3-5-8 for Russell. Look for them to make a serious run at the tournament championship.

Kolten Olynek has 5 goals in 2 games for the Outlaws.

Division 2
Saskatoon Bandits 2-0-0
Martinsville Marauders 1-1-0
Melville Millionaires 1-1-0
Melfort Mustangs 0-2-0

It looks as though the Saskatoon Bandits will be able to capture this division with a win over Melville tomorrow. Collin Shirley, who we fully expect to be selected in the top couple rounds of the draft is leading the way so far with 3-3-6, while is linemate Adam Santoro is 2-4-6. Santoro was given the MVP honours in game 2. Both kids are playing well.

For Martinsville, Austin Glover really continues to impress with 2-5-7 so far in 2 games. For Melville, Dylan Bear and Jaden Kreklewich each had 6 points. Bear has 6 assists, while Kreklewich has 4 goals. 97 born Rykr Cole, who we have highly ranked for 2012 has 3 goals. Lastly, for Melfort, of note Rylan Freed has 2 points in 2 games. Freed should go in the top 4 rounds.

Division 3
Weyburn Redwings 2-0-0
Saskatoon Generals 1-1-0
Saskatoon Stallions 1-1-0
Meadow Lake Stamps 0-2-0

The Weyburn Redwings are really piling up the goals in this Division with 14-0 and 4-2 wins. The 14-0 games was vs. Meadow Lake who also lost 10-2 to the Saskatoon Stallions. For Weyburn, they are getting a fairly balanced attack at the top with Nicholas Pouliot and Trey Tendler leading the way with 7 pts each. Tendler has 5 goals. 97 born players Nagy and Carleton each have 4 points.

For the Saskatoon Stallions it is skilled forward Rourke Chartier leading the way with 4-4-8, including a 6 point game vs. Meadow Lake. Joshua Bly also has 4 goals for the Stallions. For the Generals, David Sheppard continues to lead the way with 4-1-5 but Vukie Mpofu and Ben Verrall have been huge forces on defence when out there for the Generals.

Division 4
Saskatoon Maniacs 2-0-0
Warman Wildcats 1-1-0
Saskatoon Frostbite 1-1-0
Unity Lazers 0-2-0

The Saskatoon Maniacs handled the Warman Wilcats tonight 5-1 to capture the pool and a likely semi-final showdown with the Weyburn Redwings. For the deep, balanced Maniacs, Southem and Leedahl each have 3 goals and 4 pts while 97 born Jimmy Lambert leads the way with 5 points so far. Connor Swystun has been one of the better dmen in the tournament so far.

A couple small sized forwards continue to lead the way for the Frostbite as they have all year long. Jesse Shynkaruk has 3-4-7 and has shown tremendous skill in both games viewed. His 97 born line-mate Cameron Hebig has shown very well thus far as well. Keifer Heintz and Spencer Bast have shown well for Unity so far.

Stay tuned for more tomorrow and perhaps a couple player comments.

....................................

Over at the Burnaby Christmas Tournament, Congratulations to the BWC Bruins who defeated the Kamloops Jardine Blazers 4-3 in what was said to be a 10 round shoot-out. An unlikely source in Johnny McPherson scored the shoot-out winner. Earlier in the tournament the Blazers and Bruins also tied 1-1. A pair of great games between two of the best in western Canada. Seafair was able to capture the bronze medal game with a 10-3 win over Cloverdale.

....................................

At the Edmonton Invitational, Leduc won the final 6-0 over Prince George in the final.

Awards
MVP - Ryley Lindgren - Winnipeg Sharks F
Top Forward - Liam Gregor - Leduc
Top Defenceman - Kord Pankewicz - Leduc
Top Goalie - Mitchell profeit - Prince George

WEHP LIVE at the GSHL TOURNAMENT

During the GSHL tournament in Saskatoon, I'll do my best to update the games as they become final and try to add as much stats as possible.

Saskatoon Bandits 4 - Martinsville Marauders 3
There have been a couple of games already completed this morning. First of all, the Saskatoon Bandits narrowly defeated the Martinsville Marauders 4-3. Leading the way for the Bandits was Graham Gove with 2 goals and highly touted Collin Shirley with 2 goals and 1 assist. For Martinsville, it was Teal Sobkowicz with 2 goals and Austin Glover with a pair of assists. Glover is Martinsville's leading scorer this season with 22 points in 14 league games. Players of the game were goaltending Austin Dahl from the Outlaws and Austin Glover from Martinsville.

Saskatoon Outlaws 6 - Swift Current Kubos Raiders 3
In a game that features a couple of the more highly touted prospects from Saskatchewan in Kolten Olynek from the Outlaws and Tim Vanstone from the Raiders, it was the Outlaws prevailing. For the Outlaws, it was Olynek, Kade Kehoe and 97 born defenceman Connor Hobbs each scoring twice. 97 born forward Wyatt Sloboshan had a pair of assists. Hobbs was named player of the game for the Outlaws. For Swift Current, it was Jordan Wittman earning player of the game honours with 1-1-2, Tim Vanstone was held to 1 assist. Big defenceman, Carter Forsyth scored a goal and is going to be someone to watch moving forward.

Saskatoon Maniacs 7 - Saskatoon Frostbite 1
A battle featuring a pair of GSHL teams was nothing more than a lopsided afair with the Maniacs skating by the Frostbite 7-1. The top line of Shynkaruk/97 born Hebig and Ashton Wake combined for the lone Frostbite goal with Wake scoring it. For the Maniacs, it was Dawson Leedahl leading the way with 2-1-3 and Jimmy Lambert had 3 assists. Leedahl is a player is rising fast up our rankings. Lambert is expected to be a high pick for the 2012 bantam draft. Rod Southem scored a pair of goals for the Maniacs and defenceman Connor Swystun had a pair of assists. Players of the game were goaltender Austin Swystun for the Maniacs and Mike Melnyk for the Frostbite, Melnyk was held scoreless.

Saskatoon Generals 6 - Saskatoon Stallions 5
In another all saskatoon battle it was the Generals narrowly beating the Stallions 6-5. Leading the way for the Generals it was David Sheppard with 3-1-4. Tyler Pickett scored a goal and added 14 Pims! Joshua Bly had 2-1-3 for the Stallions, highly touted Rourke Chartier had 1-1-2. Hunter Rowlett had 14 Pims. Players of the game were Keenan Sjodin for the Stallions who had 1 assist and for the Generals it was David Sheppard.

Weyburn Redwings 14 - Meadow Lake Stamps 0
In one of the most lopsided games in recent memory at this tournament, the SSBHL Weyburn Redwings rolled to a 14-0 win over the Meadow Lake Stamps. Nicholas Pouliot, the younger brother of WHL 1st rounder Derrick Pouliot had a huge game with 2-4-6, Braden Melon and Trey Tendler each scored 4 goals and 97 born Regan Nagy had 4 assists. Braden Melon was named player of the game by scouts in attendance.

Warman Wildcats 6 - Unity Lazers 2
One of the pre-tournament favourites Warman Wildcats were able to get by the Unity Lazers 6-2. Kiefer Hintz, a 97 born talent was easily the best player for Unity with 1-1-2 and many chances for more, however Braden Lacoursiere was named player of the game with some good two-way play. For Warman it was #1 overall ranked Ryan Pilon with 1-2-3 and top 97 prospect Terrell Draude with 1-1-2. Player of the game for Warman was Paul Farbacher who had a pair of assists.

Russell Rams 8 - Tisdale Ramblers 2
As expected, the Russell Rams defeated the Tisdale Ramblers 8-2. Russell, who plays AA in the Parkisimo Hockey League in Manitoba were able to bring along the Sanheim twins from Elkhorn to complete their shortened roster. They join Jayce Hawryluk who is absolutely tearing apart his league with over 7 points per game so far. For Russell, Jayce Hawryluk had 3-2-5 and Rylee Zimmer 1-3-4. Defenceman Taylor Sanheim had 1-1-2. The player of the game for Russell was goaltender Sean Cook. Chornawka and Stadnek scored for Tisdale and player of the game was goaltender Colt Prall.

Melville Millionaires 7 - Melfort Mustangs 6
SSBHL's Melville kept the CFHL winless so far in the tournament with a 7-6 victory this afternoon. Jaden Kreklewich had 3 goals for Melville and Dylan Bear had 3 assists. 97 born dman, Ethan Bear had a goal as well for Melville. Donovan Neuls had 2-1-3. The player of the game for Melville was Jaden Kreklewich who had the 3 goals. For Melfort, Chad Grambo had a pair of goals, Rylan Freed had an assists and the player of the game was Caleb Goudy with 1-1-2.

New Year's Eve Primer

The most frantic portion of the hockey season is taking place right now with several tournaments taking place across western Canada over the holiday season.

Starting over in B.C. is the Burnaby Christmas Tournament, featuring 16 teams from the province. To nobodies surprise it will be 2 of the top ranked teams in western Canada going head to head as Kamloops will play the BWC in the finals or Gold game if you will, while Cloverdale will meet Seafair in the 3rd place or Bronze game. Kamloops was able to reach the final after losing their first game of the tournament to Cloverdale by a 5-4 score. However, Kamloops was able to shake off the turkey legs with a 9-2 drubbing over Seafair, a 1-1 tie vs. BWC (who they meeet in the final) and then a 10-0 win over Mission to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi's they would have a re-match with Cloverdale and this time they came out victorious with a 6-2 win. BWC had a bit of an easier road with a convicing 7-2 win over Seafair and a 5-0 over Cloverdale. After tieing Kamloops 1-1, they thumped North Delta 12-0 and then did similar to Semiahmoo with a 8-0 win. BWC would then advance to the final with a narrow 3-2 semi-final victory over Seafair.

Coming in to the tournament the 4 top ranked teams all make it to the final 4 as predicted. Should make for some interesting games today. Stay tuned for some more thoughts later.

..................................

Now for a tournament taking place south of the border in Everett at the SJHA Bantam AAA Holiday Classic, the tournament is winding down. This tournament featured teams primarily from Washington State as well as a few teams from B.C. including Surrey, Victoria, Cowichan Valley and Cloverdale AA. Also in the tournament were a couple teams from California.

There were three division, each broken down in to 5 teams. Orange County, California Wave AA and the Surrey Thunder all went 4-0-0 and advanced to the playoff round. In the end, it was the Surrey Thunder defeating the California Wave in the final by a score of 2-1 to capture the tournament title.

.................................

Moving over to Alberta now, there is a tournament taking place in Edmonton called the Edmonton Invitational Tournament of Champions. This tournament features both AA and AAA teams.

The Prince George Bantam Cougars will take on the Leduc Oil Kings in the final, while CAC will take on Scott Pump in the 3rd place game. Prince George was able to reach the final after defeating Scott Pump 4-2 in the semi's, while Leduc beat the Winnipeg Sharks 7-2 to advance. Leduc will be looking for revenge in the final vs. Prince George after Prince George beat them 7-3 in prelim play.

The "AA" final will have the Alaska Northstars vs. the Grand Prairie AA Storm. The Alaska Northstars outscored their oppenents 46-6 in the 4 games en route to the final today.

.........................................

And of course today, the GSHL tournament will get underway with 16 teams taking part. I'll try my best to provide updates in between games throughout the tournament and will have a big re-cap in the January 5, 2011 newsletter.

........................................

Finally this morning, there are a few players of note taking part at the Macs Midget AAA tournament in Calgary. For Beardy's, who went 3-1 in the tournament, Braden Oleksyn who has played all year for Beardy's in midget AAA and has averaged a point per game or near that was held pointless in 4 games, while Ryan Pilon and Wyatt Hinson were also AP players called up and were also held pointless.

Also, 96 born Rhett Gardner was a call-up with the Moose Jaw Generals and scored 2 goals in 4 games at the Macs. Pretty impressive.

Some interesting omissions due to only 1 player being allowed to be selected per position, per team.
Brayden Point was left off the team, depsite leading the entire AMBHL scoring. Hardly fair for Brayden, his family, whl scouts and fans who will be watching to leave a player off the team in place of some of the others who made it. Let us know who you think should've been on the team but who isn't.

WEHP Announce Provincial All-star teams

Today, WEHP announce the 3 forwards, 2 defenseman and 1 goaltender who we've decided to name to the provincial all-star teams. We have surveyed players, coaches, GM's, scouts from around western Canada to come up with the list. First up is Manitoba

Hockey Manitoba

F - Adam Brooks - Winnepeg Hawks - He is the cream of the crop offensively in the Winnipeg Bantam Hockey League. Brooks has led his Winnipeg Hawks team to a 16-0-1-1 record while piling up the points. He currently has 34-24-58 in just 18 games. Brooks was also a recent call-up in the Midget league where he scored a goal in his lone game. It will be interesting for everyone to see how Brooks can do against the top Alberta, BC teams in St. Albert.

F- Dallas Miller - Winnipeg Sharks - Although he is born in 1997 and does have a few detractors out there, there is no denying his skill. Dallas has 19 goals this season which rank him 2nd in the league and his 31 points have him in the top 5. Miller is expected to be a high first round selection in the 2012 WHL bantam draft.

F- Jayce Hawryluk - Russell Rams - Although Jayce is playing AA hockey in the Parkisimo Hockey League, there is no denying he has made a huge impact in Manitoba hockey this season. Hawryluk has been averaging over 6 points per game this season. There is a good chance Hawryluk won't crack the first couple rounds of the bantam draft but his showing at the New Years Eve Saskatoon tournament will go a long way to perhaps vaulting him up there.

D- Taylor Fisher - Winnipeg Warriors - Perhaps one of the biggest kids who will be available for the draft in May. Fisher is a 6'1 225lb defenceman who is really starting to iron out his deficiencies in his game and really is becoming a huge force. Fisher leads all defensmean in scoring with 9-19-28 points so far. Fisher is projected by most scouts to be in the first round but some have him a lot lower. Taylor has had a great first half.

D- Jordan Thomson - Southeast Cougars(Midget) - One of the few players to be playing midget hockey this season. Jordan combines size, skill and poise to make him one of the top players available for the WHL draft. Although Jordan has yet to score a goal in Midget hockey this season, he is really starting to adapt and be one of the top defenders on some nights in the league.

G- Kyle McColm - Winnipeg Sharks - When Kyle is in net for the Sharks, he gives his team a chance to win hockey games. Kyle has single handed won games this year for Winnipeg. McColm is still a bit on the small size but we aren't ranking players for the draft in this list, simply stating who the best goalie has been and our vote go's to McColm.

Pre Xmas break stuff

Last night in the AMBHL, it was the Calgary Bisons continuing their unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 5-3 win over the Calgary Bronks in a battle of SE vs. NW Calgary teams. Brayden Point took over the scoring lead with 2-2-4 on the night, giving him 28-43-71 in 22 games. Point is on track for 42-65-107, that would be one of the highest outputs the league has seen. Will somebody take this kid in the first round, they should! Mowbray and Welykholowa each had 1-1. Mowbray has 22 goals in 22 games. He is really turning it on! The Bisons were without a couple defenseman and 97 born star Nick Merkley.

Leduc had quite the weekend, outscoring its oppenants 19-3 in a pair of lopsided victories. Leduc was led offensively by Liam Gregor once again who scored 2-1-3, Liam had a 7 point weekend. Gregor is now 4th in league scoring with 23-25-48 points. Tyler Dorval and Kord Pankewicz also scored twice for Leduc. Pankewicz has been listed as a defenseman the past few games, I haven't seen him play lately, I hope to have more on this later. Defenseman Grayden Smith had 3 assists in the win. Nolan Kruizenga stopped 34/35 shots. We believe Nolan will go in the top few rounds of the draft. Justin Kirkland had the lone goal for Camrose.

From Saturday, Ty Mappin fired home a hat-trick as Red Deer White defeated Medicine Hat 5-3. Mappin, who played defense up until this year has 27 goals in 22 games to go with his 46 points has him 6th in league scoring. He has 24 more points than any other player on his team. Logan Hermus is putting together a nice season with 4-14-18 from defense, after scoring a goal and 2 assists. Carson Pickett scored once again for Medicine Hat and he is really turning it up now.

Lastly, there are a couple more big games in the AMBHL before the crazy tournament season starts up.

........................................................................

From Manitoba over the weekend, it was the Winnipeg Hawks who will be the lone Manitoba rep at the St. Albert tournament in January running their record to 16-0-2 with a 9-0 win over Brandon and then a 5-2 win over the 2nd place Winnipeg Sharks. Against Brandon, Adam Brooks scored 2-3-5, Dane Shioler had 2-2-4 and Dallas Starodub had 2-3-5. Then yesterday, Adam Brooks scored another goal and 2 assists in the 5-3 win over the Sharks. Brooks now has 34-24-58 in 18 games. Dallas Miller had 1-1-2 in the loss, Miller is a 97 born player, playing age advanced hockey this season. Miller is having an impressive season with 16-10-26 in 14 games and is amongst the league leaders for goals despite being the lone 97 born in the league.

.............................................................................

Now a few scores from over the weekend in the PCAHA:

BWC 4 - Chilliwack 1

Abbotsford 6 - Seafair 4

Langley 9 - Hollyburn 2

Over in the OMAHA

Kamloops 12 - Vernon 0

Kamloops 6 - Kelowna 1

Chad Butcher leads the league in scoring with 13-15-28, followed by team-mate Ryan Gropp at 10-14-24. Brett Menneaur from Westside has 11 goals.

December 20, 2010 newsletter is now ready!

In this edition of the newsletter, we update the 1996 age group mid season stats. Most of the players are updated except for a few PCAHA and BC teams who don't release their stats.

I had a chance to sit down with perhaps the top 1997 born player from the province of Alberta who admires and wants to play like Drew Doughty. I also spoke with a very under-rated prospects from Northern Alberta who has been a captain and leader for years. Finally, I spoke with one of the top goalies who took his talents to one of the Canadian Athletic schools. It seems like a very good choice for him.

Also, we have now launched a Top 25 list for the Western United States kids who may be taking their talents North of the border. The ranking is of players who we feel may come, some are left off the list who have indicated they likely won't. In future newsletter, I hope to be able to preview the top ones.

St. Albert Tournament....Groups set!

The groups are set for the St. Albert John Reid Memorial Tournament which takes place from January 20-23 at the Mark Messier, Performance and Troy Murray arena's in St. Albert.

Group 1

Kamloops Jardine Blazers (2)

SSAC Southgate Lions (6)

Leduc Allen's Transport (12)

Calgary Royals (13)

Group 2

Spruce Grove PAC Saints (8)

Airdrie Xtreme (11)

Seafair Islanders (10)

Notre Dame Hounds (3)

Group 3

BWC Bruins (1)

Phoenix Jr. Coyotes (NR)

St. Albert (9)

Red Deer White (15)

Group 4

Winnipeg Hawks (4)

Calgary Bisons (5)

Sherwood Park (14)

POE (7)
On the surface, it looks like Group 4 could be the most competitive with Group 1 not far behind. You have to think that BWC and Notre Dame should both win their groups. The Phoenix team has some very good players on it but its not clear how good they really are, they ae somewhat of a wild card. It would've been good to see the Prince Albert Pirates play in this tournament to see how they stack up. They have rolled through everybody in Saskatchewan this year and baring a major upset will represent Saskatchewan at Westerns. Prince Albert is a "AA" team and that is the reason those Saskatchewan teams aren't able to attend the prestigious tournaments in St. Albert, Medicine Hat, Kamloops etc...

Friday....Winnipeg Hawks star shines

Over in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA league, the Winnipeg Hawks ran their record to 14-0-1-1 with an impressive 7-0 victory over the 3rd place Winnipeg Monarchs. The Hawks have now scored 115 goals in 16 league games or just over 7 gpg. Adam Brooks led the way for the Hawks with 2 goals and 2 assists. Brooks now has 31 goals and 50 points in 16 games. Dallas Starodub scored a pair of goals, giving him 16. Dane Schioler picked up 3 more assists, he now has 27 assists which is 8 more than the 2nd place Brooks.

Earlier in the week, Adam Brooks was a Midget call-up for the Midget Hawks and he scored a SH goal to force OT and later a Shoot-out. Brooks also scored in the shoot-out.

...............................................

A couple results in from the PCAHA Flight 1 yesterday:

Abbotsford 4 - Chilliwack 4

-Abbotsford is in 3rd place at 5-2-1

-Chilliwack is in 6th at 2-4-3

Seafair 5 - Semiahmoo 0

-Seafair is in 2nd place at 6-2-1

-Semiahmoo is in 6th at 2-4-3

Now a quick look at Flight 2 which has 13 teams.

Ridge Meadows 6-2-2 34-26

Mission 6-0-2 40-16

South Delta 6-1-1 45-9

Aldergrove 5-2-3 42-30

South Delta seems to be totally dominating this group, after going 0-7-1 in the tiering portion of play earlier this year. Although in tiering, the most goals they gave up in a game was just 5 and they had three 1 goal losses and lost just 4-1 to BWC. Now in flight 2, they have won 5 of 6 games by 5 goals or more. South Delta has only allowed 9 goals in 8 games. Finally from flight 2, it is interesting to note that the only team without a loss is Mission at 6-0-2, Mission came out of tiering in group 3 where they went 7-0-1. That is now 16 games without a loss for Mission who are led by 1st round projected prospect Landyn Hickmott.

A quick look over to the Peewee league in flight 1 we see BWC at 7-0-0 while allowing just 7 goals, BWC also went 8-0-0 in tiering, and NSWC at 5-0-2 allowing just 5 goals so far this year. Langley and Abbotsford are also have to great starts at 7-1-1 and 7-3-0 respectively. Langley is averaging nearly 6 gpg which leads the league. They have cracked the 10 goal mark 3 times already this year. At the other end of the spectrum the defensive minded NSWC have 4 shut-outs in 7 games.

Thursday....Will anybody beat BWC this season?

The BWC Bruins played host to one of the teams who feel they may have a chance at knocking them off this year as the Cloverdale Colts paid a visit. It was same old, same old as BWC skated to a 6-1 victory. The key to success this year for BWC is its balanced attack and that was very much on display once again last night as 6 different goal scorers found the back of the net. DelGrosso, Pasco, Mercer, Szeto, Barzal and Burk all scored for BWC while both the Seto's were held goal-less. Szeto, Mercer, Dombovskiy and Barzal all had 2 point nights. Barzal's goal was a SH marker while Connor Burk's was a 5 on 3 goal. BWC are now 16-0-0 this season in league and tiering play, having outscored the opposition 94-13.

After BWC, there are just 5 points separating 2-7 in the standings and two of those teams played last night as Seafair tied Semiahmoo 3-3. More to come on that match-up later.

..............................

Moving east now to the AMBHL, there were 3 games on the schedule last night. St. Albert doubled up the young Edmonton CAC squad 6-3. Andrew Kary led the attack with 2 goals, including the GWG early in the 3rd period. Kary now has 9 goals this season. 1997 born Andrew Parrott had a pair of assists, his first 2 of the season. Zach Gonek found the back of the net, his 3rd goal of the season. The defenceman now has 12 points in 15 games. 10 different players fround the score-sheet for St. Albert. For CAC, 97 born Brayden Burke had a goal and an assist. Burke is expected to be one of the leading scorers in the league next year and a very high pick in the '12 bantam draft. A pair of other 97's scored for CAC with Andrew Marshall and Dylan Stewart adding singles. How good is CAC going to be next year?!

In an all Calgary battle it was the Calgary Royals over the Calgary Northstar Sabres 5-4. There were 5 different goal scorers for the Royals with Reid Duke scoring 1-1. 11 different players found the score-sheet for the Royals. Jacob Ruissen stopped 31/35 shots in the win. Reid Duke now has 44 pts in 20 games this season. Reid will be a top 10 selection on draft day. For the Northstar Sabres, Kyle Nachtigall led the way with a goal and 2 assists. Nachtigall now has 17 points in 21 games played for the 8-8-5 Northstar Sabres. Derek Mazil stopped 27/32 in the loss, he has a GAA of 3.51 this season.

Finally in the AMBHL, it was the Calgary Bisons goal parade once again as they walked over the Okotoks Oilers 10-1. The Oilers continue to play without Conner Bleackley who will be out until well in to the new year. For the Bisons, who ran their record to 17-3-1, it was MacMaster scoring 2 more goals, giving him 39 goals in 20 this season, he also adding an assist. Brayden Point scored a goal and added 3 assists. Alex Mowbray continued his rapid pace in the second half of the year with 2 more goals, giving him 21 goals in 20 games. He also turned aside 35/36 shots. The Bisons out-shot the Oilers 59-36.

......................

Finally this morning, in the CFHL, it was Melfort over Tisdale 8-4. Leading the way for Melfort was Rylan Freed with 3 goals and 3 assists. Brett Armstrong scored 3 goals for Tisdale.

Wednesday.....The Americans are coming!

During the past few weeks, I've been rounding up all my sources and friends south of the border and compiling notes in an effort to bring some American content to the site. A few of the people who donate regularly want to become aware of just who to watch down there as a possibility to come to the WHL in a couple years perhaps. There are a few very talented kids who have played in the USA U14 festival who have plans to come to the league. Over the next while and in to the new year, I'll preview a few of them and include the rest in the newsletter. A couple teasers are a talented forward who was born in Edmonton but is now with the LA Selects program and another is playing age advanced hockey in Arizona and was one of the better players in the USA at the U14 festival that took place a while ago. One of them, you'll get to see if you attend the St. Albert tournament. He is a big defenceman on the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes named Johnny Walker, he'll wear #77, watch him, he's a good one! More to come...

.......................

It was a light night across Western Canada in terms of league action. In the AMBHL, the SSAC Soutgate Lions defeated Edmonton KC 5-4. John Queenville and Riley Simpson each had a goal and an assist and backup goaltender Daniel Robinson turned aside 9 of 13 shots. For KC, Nicolas Jones who is starting to perform at levels most of us expected had a goal and 2 assists. Defenceman Tyler Thorburn had a goal and an assist. Shots on goal were 48-13 for SSAC.

In Saskatoon last night, it was a battle of two of the better forwards in the league as Kolten Olynek and the Outlaws took on Collin Shirley and the Bandits. It was Olynek's Outlaws who prevailed with a 5-0 victory. For the Outlaws,it was Jordan Wells with 3 goals, Kobe Kindrachuk had 3 assists and 1998 born call-up Garrett Pilon had a goal and an assist.

..................................

Now on to some of the league action that took place over the weekend across the various leagues. The BWC Bruins played a pair of weekend games, first taking on the NSWC and it was a nail biter. The BWC would prevail 4-3, outshooting the NSWC 25-15. Harper and Pasco each had a goal and an assist in the victory, Delgrosso scored, tipping home a Lucas Mercer slap shot to round out the scoring. 1997 born prospect Jansen Harkins scored 2 goals for NSWC to lead the way.
Then yesterday, the BWC walked all over Hollyburn 11-0, outshooting them 37-5! Sydney Harper had 2 goals and his linemates Cam/Chris seto each scored as well. Connor Pasco had 3 assists in the game. BWC plays Cloverdale on Wednesday night.

In other action, Cloverdale skated by Seafair 2-1 and Abbotsford ran their record to 4-2-0 with a 3-2 win over Semiahmoo.

...............................

A couple highlights now from the weekend that was in the AMBHL. The Calgary Bisons continued their winning ways upping their record to 16-3-1 with a 10-2 win over Medicine Hat on Sunday. Brayden Point had 5 assists and defenseman Brycen Martin had 4 assists. The goalscorers were Ben Assad (3), Tanner MacMaster (2), Alex Mowbray (2) and Landon Welykolowa (2). Point and MacMaster are in a battle for the league scoring race with just a 1 point lead for MacMaster at 65-64. Both players are on track for over 100 points, something that hasn't been done too often in the AMBHL.

The Okotoks Oilers played their first game without star forward Conner Bleackley. If you remember, Bleackley took a slash on the wrist and will be out for about 6-7 more weeks. So without Bleackley, the Oilers beat the Calgary Bronks 1-0. Brodie Wilson scored the only goal for Okotoks, his 2nd of the season. Michael Conrad turned aside all 30 shots he faced for the shutout.

Lloydminster went up to Leduc on Sunday and walked away with an impressive 5-2 victory. Bryce Woodward scored Lloydminster's last 4 goals giving him 16 goals in 20 games this season and 28 points. Clayton Almberg had 3 assists and Tyler Busch had a goal and 2 assists, giving him a team leading 32 points. Lloydminster is now 11-7-2 and have averaged over 4 goals per game this season. The future is bright too for Lloyd with Andrew Koep putting up over a point per game as a 97 born and how about 98 born defenceman Kale Clague with 5-11-16 and 60 Pims!! How good is this kid going to be for the 2013 WHL bantam draft which is over 2 years away for him yet!

In Airdrie, the Xtreme's winning ways came to a hault with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Red Deer White. Mik Doell led the way for Red Deer with his 11th and 12th goals of the season. Tyler Wong scored both goals for Airdrie, giving him 24 on the season.

Spruce Grove beat the host Grand Prairie 6-1 over the weekend. Thomas Foster continued his impressive play with 3 goals and 1 assist. Foster is one of the fastest risers for the bantam draft this season. Foster now has 22 goals and 35 points in 21 games for the Saints. Ryan Helt and Jason Miller each had 1-1-2 in the game. Miller has 30 points and Helt has 24 this season. On Saturday, Spruce Grove shutout Grand Prairie 4-0. Gage Joel and Matt McNeil each had 1-1-2 in the victory. Matthew Meek-White played both games over the weekend and had a shutout in this one turning aside all 23 shots. Meek-White stopped 39 of 40 shots over the weekend. J.T. Barlett, the other goalie for Spruce Grove wasn't available so AP player Dylan Wolodko was the backup. By the way, Meek-White hasn't lost a league game this season at 7-0-2.

................................

In Saskatchewan, the league play was very light as 24 of the teams were taking part in the Prince Albert tournament. Only a handful of teams didn't attend the tournament. However, Swift Current was in action against the Regina Oilers in SSBHL action down in Swift Current. Swift Current skated away with a 4-1 victory. Tim Vanstone led the way for Swift Current with 2 goals and 1 assist. All heck broke loose late in the game after a cross checking major by Regina Oilers Matthew Moore late in the 3rd period. Tim Vanstone now has 27 points in 10 games, 1 point back of the league lead.

If anyone was wondering how top ranked Braden Oleksyn is doing you can check out the next issue of the newsletter but he is really starting to grow accustomed to play in midget hockey. With the Beardy's Blackhawks of the SMAAAHL, Oleksyn has played in 29 games for Beardy's and has a very impressive 13-13-26 points. However as of late, he is one of the hottest players in Saskatchewan Midget hockey with points in his last 6 games scoring 5-6-11 points. If you think this is all due to 1st overall selection Alex Forsberg....think again, Forsberg has been hurt since October 28th and Oleksyn is picking up the slack!

.........................

Over in Manitoba now, is there any team hotter than the Winnipeg Hawks? The Hawks are now 13-0-1-1 in league play after 7-5 and 9-0 wins over the Winnipeg Warriors and Interlake respectively. The Hawks are averaging just over 7 goals per game. Adam Brooks scored 3 goals and 1 assist against the warriors and then 2 goals and 1 assist against Interlake. Brooks is simply running away with the scoring race with 46 points now in 15 games, that is 16 more than the 2nd place player. His 29 goals are now 14 more than team-mate Adam Wowryk.

Taylor Fisher continues to lead all defenseman in scoring with 7-17-24 in 16 games this season.

Lastly, for those of you who got the last newsletter, there was a profile on the other bantam aged player playing Midget hockey this season. Jordan Thomson is playing with the Southwest Cougars in the Manitoba Midget League. The 5'10 160lb Thomson is holding his own as a 14 year old on defence with 0-12-12 in 27 games to go along with 26 pims. Thomson is expected to go in the first round of the WHL bantam draft in May.

Prince Albert Wins Tournament

The Prince Albert Venice House Pirates continue to roll this season with yet another tournament victory today in Prince Albert. The Pirates won both of their pool games, starting off with a 13-1 victory over the Winnipeg Bantam AA Sharks. In fairness to the AA Sharks out of Winnipeg though is that they were solely comprised of 97 born kids and even had a couple 98 born players on the roster. The Pirates then put up another double digit game in a 10-4 win over the Moose Jaw AA Warriors. In the quarter finals, the Pirates had a scare with a narrow 6-5 OT win over the fiesty Weyburn Redwings team. They then faced Martensville and handed them a 6-4 loss in the semi's en route to the final against the Saskatoon Maniacs. In the final, the Pirates were able to once again out-gun a team with a 6-4 tournament win and another championship.

All-Star Team as voted by WHL scouts in attendence:
Forward - Miles Warkentine
Forward - Ryan Duret
Forward - Kolten Olynek (scored 6 goals vs. Yorkton)
Defense - Jordan Harris
Defense - Ryan Pilon
Goalie - Rylan Parenteau

I hope to have more on the tournament hopefully tomorrow.

...................

Also congratulations to Juan De Fuca, winners of the Rick Lapointe tournament in Victoria.

................

One more item this evening, the teams are set for the St. Albert tournament or the John Reid Memorial tournament if you will:
Airdrie Xtreme
Burnaby Winter Club Bruins
Calgary Bisons
Calgary Royals
Kamloops Jardine Blazers
POE
Notre Dame
Leduc Allen's transport
Phoenix Firebirds
Red Deer Rebels White
Seafair Islanders
Sherwood Park Flyers
Spruce Grove PAC Saints
SSAC Southgate Lions
Winnipeg Hawks

This should be a simply outstanding tournament with the top 4 teams from BC coming to the tournament. Notre Dame from Saskatchewan and the top team from Manitoba with the Winnipeg Hawks. Not to mention all the best AAA teams Alberta has to offer. This will be a tournament scouts certainly will not want to miss and I would expect St. Albert to be buzzing from January 20-23, 2011.

Away at the Prince Albert Tournament

Just a note to inform everyone that the posting will likely be light over the next few days. I'll be at the Prince Albert Bantam Tournament which features 23 teams from Saskatchewan and the Winnipeg AA Sharks. If I get a chance, I'll post some thoughts over the weekend, we'll see.

.................

A couple quick notes first though. In the AMBHL, Leduc racked up 11 goals over the normally stingy Spruce Grove PAC Saints en route to an 11-4 win. Kord Pankewicz who played defence in this one had 3-3-6 and Braden Jakubowski 2-4-6, Liam Gregor had 5 points and Evan Polei had 4 points in the victory. Thomas Foster had 2 goals in the loss for Spruce Grove.

In the SSBHL, the Weyburn Redwings Bantam AA were able to hang in with Notre Dame in a 7-4 loss. Nicolas Pouliot had 2 goals, giving him a league leading 18 goals in 11 games for Weyburn. Blake Penner had 2-2-4, he now has 26-14-40 in just 12 league/exhibition games.

................................

Some Winnipeg bantam league action from this week now. Taylor Fisher continued his hot streak with 1-2-3 in a 4-4 tie with the Winnipeg Monarchs on Wednesday night. Fisher now has 22 points and is in the top 5 in league scoring. Fisher is a 6'1 225 defenceman who should be a high pick in May. Also, Adam Brooks had a hat-trick in his last game, giving him a league high 24 goals and 39 points this season. Brooks has a 14 point scoring lead on his team-mates Wowryk and Starodub. His 24 goals are 10 more than 2nd place Liam Kroeker from the Winnipeg Monarchs.

Wednesday coffee talk

The PCAHA Flight 1 regular season is now well underway after 8 games of tiering play and the BWC Bruins seemingly haven't missed a beat in league play. On Monday night, they defeated the Langley Eagles 9-2. Scoring for BWC was Delgrosso, Chris Seto, Cam Seto and Victor Dombrovskiy all with 2 goals each, Dombrovskiy also added 3 assists for a 5 point night. Then last night, they had a showdown with the Abbotsford Hawks and defeated them 3-0. Goal scorers were, Cam Seto, Pasco and Harper....1997 born goaltender McBride had the shutout. BWC is rolling at 5-0, outscoring the opposition 37-5.

From Monday night, Seafair was able to get back on the winning side of things with a 6-1 victory over Chilliwack. Seafair is now 5-1 with there only league loss coming to BWC 11-1 back on Saturday night. Interesting to note that Austin Adamson is the Seafair leading scorer through 6 league games with 6-1-7, ahead of highly touted Tyler Sandhu and Alec Dawydiak who both have 5 points this year only. Interesting to note that there were a couple fights in the Seafair/Chilliwack game, we'll see what comes of that.

Also from Monday, NSWC was able to win there 2nd straight game with a 5-4 victory over Cloverdale. I think Cloverdale and Abbotsford have to be a bit upset with there starts so far this year. Both were expected to perhaps challenge BWC a bit this year but it doesn't look like that will happen in the end. Even Seafair, who ae 5-1-0 got thumped by BWC as mentioned earlier.

.................................

Taking a look at the AMBHL and some of the top scorers today, we see Tanner MacMaster leading the way with 35 goals and 62 points in just 18 games. Tanner also has 55 pims which means he must've gotten into a tussle somewhere along the way! Tanner's 35 goals gives him a 10 goal lead over Cavin Leth of Lethbridge and his linemate Brayden Point who both have 25 goals (I'm sure you could've done that math)! Brayden Point continues to lead the Assist category with 34, which is 7 more than Airdrie forward Tyler Wong and his linemate Tanner MacMaster.

The rookie or shall I say 97 born scoring leader is SSAC Southgate forward Giorgio Estephan with 14-20-34 in just 18 games. He also has 2 GWG to his credit. The 5'9 145lb Estephan is expected to be a very high selection in the 2012 bantam draft. He has opened up a 9 point lead over Nick Merkley who has 13-12-25 for the Calgary Bisons.

If you want a clutch player, look no further than Brett Pollock of Sherwood Park and Mackenzie Bauer of Airdrie. They both have 5 GWG which leads the league. In fact, pretty much half of Pollocks 11 goals have been GWG and he has scored half of Sherwood Park's 10 GWG!

Finally, Brycen Martin leads all defenceman in scoring with 1-19-20 points in 17 games. Martin has a chance to be selected in the 1st round of the draft this season.

.................................

In Saskatchewan, the CFHL was off for the night as was the SSBHL. So just the GSHL saw some action and it was the Saskatoon Outlaws falling to the Martinsville Marauders 6-3 in Martinsville. Kobe Kindrachuk had a goal and an assist for the Outlaws while Kolten Olynek had a pair of assists. Mitchell Canaday allowed all 6 goals for the Outlaws.

December 8, 2010 newsletter is now ready!

In this issue of the newsletter, we survey our scouts and sources and once again adjust the rankings for both the top 150 for 96 born and top 75 for 97 born players. Some fast risers on the list and some who haven't quite taken the next step yet.

I had a chance this week to speak with a defenceman in Manitoba who wants to follow Reid Gow's footsteps, we think he is well on his way!

I also spoke with one of the biggest defenceman available for the draft who has a rocket of a shot but is skating a concern?

And we preview a couple of the top 97 born talents available for the 2012 WHL Bantam draft. One has a famous father who played in the NHL and a brother who currently plays in the WHL who should be a high NHL draft pick in June. Also, I spoke with a rural Manitoba player who won't be flying under the radar for much longer!

Please note: The next issue will be the final issue before Christmas. There will be a comprehensive tournament re-cap of the Prince Albert bantam tournament which features most of all the Saskatchewan bantam teams, as well as the Russell Rams. Also, I hope to preview the St. Albert tournament.

Well wishes for Conner Bleackley

Okotoks Oilers forward Conner Bleackley will miss up to 8 weeks due to injury. He was taken off on a stretcher in the 3rd period of a game between Okotoks and the Calgary Northstars from a slash to the wrist. Bleackley has a broken wrist and we wish him a fast, speedy and healthy recovery. Bleackley is in his bantam draft season and should go in the top 2 rounds.

WEHP Announce Top 10 Team Rankings

2. Kamloops Jardine Blazers
3. Winnipeg Hawks
4. Prince Albert Pirates
5. Calgary Bisons
6. SSAC Southgate Lions
7. Airdrie Xtreme
8. Winnipeg Sharks

*Please note that POE, OHA, Notre Dame, Calgary Edge are not included in the rankings due to being able to draw players from outside the region. All very good teams who would all likely make the list though.

Kamloops first league loss...goalie scores in the ambhl

The Kamloops Jardine Blazers suffored their first league play loss over the weekend with a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Kelowna Jr. Rockets. Josh Blanchard scored 3 times for Kelowna in the win, while Chad Butcher replied with a goal and 2 assists for Kamloops. Then yesterday, Kamloops was able to get back on track with a 4-3 win over POE. Matthew Murray scored the GWG with just 4 seconds left on the clock and also added an assist. Chad Butcher had a strong game once again with 2 goals and 1 assist. Ryan Gropp has been held to just 2 pts in his past 3 games.

In the AMBHL over the weekend, 1997 born goalie Brody Dirk scored a goal! Glove hand, top shelf, I'm told! Not really, but interesting nonetheless. This happened as the Red Deer Rebels Black tied Spruce Grove 4-4. Spruce Grove is now winless in their past couple games. The Rebels Black were shutout the previous day 2-0 at the hands of Airdrie. Dirk was held off the scoresheet in this one. However, the Airdrie goalie Malcolm Walilko turned aside 14 shots for the goose egg. Other noteworthy events in the AMBHL was the Calgary Royals defeating Medicine Hat 7-4, in that game Carson Pickett scored all 4 goals for Medicine Hat giving him 16 on the season. In case you were wondering, the Calgary Bisons and their two big guns were in action once again over the weekend winning 5-4 over Red Deer White. Ty Mappin continued his steller season with a goal and 2 assists. The Bisons two big guns were relatively quiet with Point picking up a goal and an assists, his goal though was the GWG. Tanner MacMaster had just 1 assist. It should be noted that Alex Mowbray is giving the Bisons some secondary scoring as of late with 6 goals in his past two games. Mowbray now has 17 goals and 29 points in 19 games. He has been flanked by big Landon Welykholowa and 97 born forward Nick Merkley.

Something a bit different to look at this morning, the penalty minute leaders. Yes, they deserve recognition as well! In the AMBHL, Toby Shattler leads the parade with 93pims in 18 games. Shattler has also been able to put up a few points despite his time in the box with 5-4-9. He is followed closely by 6'0 160lb Trevor Posch who has 90pims in 18 games. Cavin Leth, the AMBHL modern day Rick Tocchet I guess you could say, has 86pims in 20 games but also has 25 goals so far!

A look over at the SSBHL, we see Dallas Eldstrom with 88pims in just 9 games! Eldstrom is a defenceman from Moose Jaw.

Saturday night blowouts

Starting off in the SSBHL, the Weyburn Crescent Point Redwings had their way with the Melville Millionaires 18-3. Nicholas Pouliot, the brother of WHL 1st overall selection Derrick Pouliot had a huge night with 5 goals and 2 assists. Pouliot now has a league leading 16 goals in 10 games. Lucas Cole had 3-2-5 and highly touted 97 born prospect Regan Nagy had a 5 point night. For melville, Jaden Kreklewich had 2 goals in the defeat while 97 born first round candidate for next year, Ethan Bear had a pair of helpers.

From Friday night, the Notre Dame Hounds once again showed no mercy defeating Moose Jaw 12-0. Ben Dupereault had a 4 point, Blake Penner had 3 points and Carter Diederich had a trick for the Hounds.

In the Centre Four Hockey League, the Prince Albert Pirates defeated West Central 22-4. Scorers and player stats will be posted later. Also in the CFHL, Melfort defeated Unity 5-3, Rylan Freed had 3 goals and 1 assist. Humboldt defeated Battleford 7-0, this coming after a 7-5 win in Meadow Lake the night before.

Finally in the GSHL, the Saskatoon Outlaws got 2 goals from Kolten Olynek, giving him 31 goals on the season en route to a 2-2 with the Saskatoon Maniacs. Both the Maniacs and Outlaws are tied for the league lead with 15 points, 3 points ahead of the Saskatoon Generals. In other GSHL action, the Martinsville Marauders beat the Saskatoon Stallions 4-1. The Stallions have just 1 victory in 10 league games so far this season and have scored a league low 31 goals.

........................

Is anyone going to be able to knock off the BWC in league play this season? Last night, they crushed the hopes of the Seafair Islanders with an 11-1 victory, allowing just 14 shots in the process. Defenceman Victor Dombrovskiy scored 3 times and forward Chris Seto also scored 3 times in the victory. Cam seto chipped in with a pair of goals as well. In other action the NSWC was able to pick up their first victory of the season, they are now 1-3. They defeated Chilliwack by a score of 5-1.

....................

A quick look over at the Calgary AA bantam league now. The Calgary AA Rangers beat the Calgary AA Blazers 10-5. A pair of highly touted 97 born players led the way for the Rangers in Braylan Shmyr and Keillan Olson. Each player had 5 point games with Shmyr scoring 3 times and Olson twice. Olson now has 9 points in his past 2 games. Shmyr is running away with the scoring lead at 21-15-36 in just 18 games. He is an AP player with the Calgary Bisons.

Couple Friday notes....

Last night in the GSHL, the Saskatoon Frostbite defeated the Saskatoon Maniacs 8-7. The Frostbite got 2 goals and 2 assists from Jesse Shynkaruk. Shynkaruk now has 23 goals and a team leading 30 points in 16 games. 97 born Cameron Hebig had a goal and an assist, Hebig is 2nd in team scoring with 8-21-29 pts this season. Dawson Leedahl and Jimmy Lambert each had strong games for the Maniacs.

In the South Sask Bantam league, Grant Naherniak turned aside 43 shots and D.J. Crane scored the only goal as Lumsden defeated the Regina Canucks 1-0. Naherniak who we have ranked as one of the better goaltending prospects from the province of Saskatchewan for the draft has played in every league game except for 1 game this season and has a 2.87GAA.

......................

In the PCAHA last night, just a few scores to run down.

Semiahmoo 8 - Hollyburn 1
Aldergrove 6 - Coquitlam 3
Mission 5 - Richmond 3
Abbotsford 5 - Surrey 4

Saskatoon Tournament News

Hockey Manitoba has decided to let the Russell Rams of the Parkisimo Hockey League attend the Saskatoon Bantam Tournament which runs over the New Years weekend tournament. The Rams were awaiting word as to if they would be allowed to bring in two key players from Elkhorn in that league. Travis and Taylor Sanheim who will project to be high picks in the WHL Bantam Draft, especially the defenceman will join Jayce Hawryluk and Rylee Zimmer on the Rams as the lone Manitoba AA team their. It will be very interesting to see how they do.

Around Western Canada Bantam

Starting off in the PCAHA Flight 1 action. It was the Seafair Islanders running their record to 3-0-0 in league play with a 5-1 over Langley. Langley now is 1-3 and have scored just 5 goals in 4 games thus far. Tyler Sandhu for Seafair has only 3 points in league play but has racked up 55 pts in 26 games so far this season in tournament, placing and league play combined.

The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins have started league play off with a bang after rolling to a 8-0-0 record in placing. The BWC are 2-0-0 and have outscored the opposition 14-2 with a 9-1 win over Cloverdale and a 5-1 win over Surrey. Abbotsford is 1-1 with a 3-2 loss to Cloverdale and a 4-1 win over Langley. And it also a bit different seeing NSWC at 0-2-0 while not even scoring a goal yet!

Moving over to the interior, it is very much still a two horse race atop the standings. Kamloops is rolling at 7-0-0 and POE is just behind at 6-2-0. Kelowna and Westside are hovering around the .500 mark. Kelowna is doing it with defence and Westside with more of an offensive style led by Brett Mennear.

Kamloops Jardine Blazers are being led thus far by Ryan Gropp and Chad Butcher offensively this season. Gropp, who has made a few tournament all-star teams this season has 33-33-66 in 30 games and is also a whopping +60. Chad Butcher is close behind at 27-34-61 in 30 games and is a +51. On defence, Joe Hicketts, who we feel will be a Top 10 pick in May has 38 pts in 29 games and a +62.

......................................

Now to Alberta and the AMBHL. The Calgary Bisons were in action last night against their cross town rivals the Calgary Bronks. The Bisons skated away with a 7-2 win and were led by the line of MacMaster, Point and Mowbray. Mowbray had 4 goals, Tanner MacMaster had 1 goal and 6 assists! Brayden Point had 2 goals and 4 assists. The Bisons are now 14-3-1 and have scored 118 goals this season which is 23 more than 2nd place in goals scored Leduc. The Bisons are now a +47 in goals for and against which also leads the league. Individually, Point and MacMaster are both on track for 100 point season and MacMaster is on track for 65-70 goals.

In other action last night, Reid Duke and Kyle O'Connor each had a goal and 2 assists and goaltending Ruissen turned aside just 12 shots for the shutout as the Bisons beat Okotoks 6-0. Conner Bleackley for Okotoks was held off the score sheet which has been a rarity.

Taking a quick look over to the Calgary AA Bantam league we see 1997 born Braylon Shmyr leading the league in scoring with 17-12-29 in 16 games. Shmyr came over from the Vancouver area this past summer and is leaving many wondering why he isn't playing AAA in the AMBHL. He is definitely good enough, go watch the kid play! However, you can understand perhaps why he's not up with the AAA as he is an AP player with the stacked Calgary Bisons team.

Finally, in Alberta, in the SCAHL we have another 97 born making waves. Bow Valley star forward Ryan Barrow has 19-21-40 in just 16 games this season. Barrow tried out for the Airdrie Xtreme in the fall and was cut.

.................................

In Saskatchewan, taking a look at the GSHL first of all. The Kolten Olynek led Saskatoon Outlaws have started out to a 6-2-2 record and sit atop the standings tied with the very deep Saskatoon Maniacs. The Maniacs are also 6-2-2. Olynek who leads the GSHL in scoring with Collin Shirley close behind had a call-up last night with the Midget Saskatoon Contacts and was named first star in the game picking up a point in the loss. We expect the smallish 5'7 Olynek to be selecting in the top couple rounds.

Up north in the Centre Four Hockey League, the Prince Albert Pirates continued to absolutely run away with things. They are 10-0-0 and have scored 100 goals, while allowing only 27. The Ryan Pilon led Warman Wildcats are next at 8-1-1. Warman's only loss this year was a 5-1 opening day loss to Prince Albert.

Ryan Duret continues to run away with the league scoring race with a 13 point lead over 97 born Terrell Draude. Duret has 22-25-47 in 10 games. The weekend, Duret and the Prince Albert Pirates play host to the 0-9-0 West Central team.

Down in the south, the Zak Zborosky led Regina Senators are 8-3-0 to lead the south standings. Zborosky has 13-14-27 in 11 games, 3 points ahead of top prospect Rhett Gardner who plays on a struggling Moose Jaw squad. Interesting to note that Gardner has been in on 23 of Moose Jaw's 41 goals this season almost 60% of his teams goals! The Balgonie Prarie Storm remain the leagues only undefeated team with a record of 7-0-1. Balgonie has been having success with a well balanced team and a defence first style of play. However, their go-to guy is Keegan Milligan with 17 pts in 11 games. Also of note down south is that Dakota Odgers, who coming in to the season was expected to make noise as a high bantam pick. However, he has played just 1 league game this year, scoring 2 goals and is injured again and could be out a long time with surgury. Finally, in case anyone is interested Blake Penner would lead the league in scoring if his stats counted! He has 22-10-32 points. If you remember, he was named to the all-star team in Medicine Hat. Josh Uhrich and Ben Duperreault are also averaging well over 2 points per game.

.....................................

In Manitoba bantam hockey, the Winnipeg Hawks keep on rolling as they defeated the Winnipeg Sharks 4-3 last night in a showdown of the leagues top two teams. The Hawks are now 10-0-2 in league play while the Sharks fall to 9-3-0. Adam Brooks has opened up an 11 point lead in the league scoring race over his team-mate Dallas Starodub. Brooks' 20 goals also lead the league by 7. The Brandon Wheat Kings continue to struggle with just 1 win so far this season and scoring just 25 goals. However, Brett Kitt is emerging as a bright spot for the team with his strong play.

Finally this morning, in the Parkisimo Bantam AA league, it is turning in to a three horse race at the top with Russell, Neepawa and Elkhorn. Neepawa is at 7-1, followed by the Jayce Hawryluk led Russell Rams at 5-0-0. Jayce Hawryluk is starting to put a few of his doubters in check now as he has scored 60 points in 12 games which includes tournament play. The Sanheim twins have Elkhorn in 3rd at 4-1-0. It is interesting to note that the Sanheims may be joining Jayce Hawryluk and the Russell Rams at a tournament in Saskatoon which takes place over the New Year's Day weekend. It will be a decent gauge to see how those players fit in with some of the top Saskatchewan born kids.

A couple Saskatchewan related things this morning....

It was an interesting battle last night in the South Sask Bantam Hockey League as the Notre Dame AAA Hounds took on the Balgonie AA Prairie Storm in Balgonie last night. Coming in to last evenings action the Prairie Storm were rolling to a 7-0-1 start, and quite easily have been the class of the AA teams in the league. However, they were facing a AAA select team from Notre Dame who made the finals of the Medicine Hat tournament and have been putting up some very lopsided results in these exhibition games thus far. Well tonight proved a bit of a stiffer test as the Prairie Storm rolled out to a 3-1 first period lead and held the game tied at 3-3 until the last seconds of the second period when high touted Blake Penner scored his 2nd of 4 goals on the night. In fact, Penner was able to score a goal each all three periods in the final minute. In the end, Notre Dame did skate away with a 7-3 win, but I think this shows that Balgonie will continue to be a force in terms of possibly representing Saskatchewan in the westerns at the end of the year.

...........................................

As we have discussed a few times already, the Prince Albert AA Bantam Tournament will take place 10 days from now. Action will take place at 4 different rinks throughout Prince Albert and feature 24 teams placed in to 8 different groups. Each group will have a team from each of the 3 major bantam leagues in Saskatchewan, with the exception of group A which has the host Prince Albert team along with the Winnipeg Sharks. Should be a very competitive group.

..........................................

And another major bantam AA tournament, this one will take place in Saskatoon beginning on New Years Eve. This tournament will feature 16 teams, including the Russell Rams from Manitoba. Russell features a couple highly talented players in Jayce Hawryluk and Ryley Zimmer. However, it should be noted that Russell is a bit short-handed with players away for various reason and another couple players hurt. The Rams are looking to bring in a pair of highly touted twins from Elkhorn, Travis and Taylor Sanheim. They are awaiting word from Hockey Manitoba on its ruling. It will be interesting to see how they can compete with some of the AA Saskatchewan teams, if in fact they are given clearance to attend. Of note, many of the top provincial teams won't be taking part in this tournament such as Balgonie, Prince Albert and Humboldt.

Upstart Kelowna advances to final in Abbotsford

The Kelowna bantam Rockets have advanced to the final in the Dallas Saunders Memorial Bantam AAA Tournament taking place in Abbotsford, B.C. The Rockets went 1-1-1 in their pool with a 3-1 win over the Calgary Bronks on Friday and a 5-5 tie vs. Langley in the tournaments opening game. Kelowna was then able to upset the host Abbotsford Hawks 4-3 in the quarters and continued that momentum with a thrilling 6-5 OT win over Juan de fuca in the semi's. The Rockets will take on a St. Albert team who is on fire in the tournament, going 3-0-0, while outscoring their oppenants 23-5. They defeated Chilliwack 7-1, Chilliwack 10-1 and Seafair 6-3. In the quarters, they beat POE 4-2 and then skated by the Calgary Bisons 6-3 in the semi's. Should be an interesting matchup.

We'll have some post tournament updates either later tonight or tomorrow morning.

..............................

Moving over to some league play highlights, the Notre Dame bantam Hounds were back in action in their AA league after losing in OT to Kamloops in the Medicine Hat tournament final. The beat or shall I say the beat-down continues as they defeated a pretty decent Regina Senators AA team 11-3. For what its worth, Joey Ratelle had 5 points and Manitoba born Tyler Ham had 4 points in the win. Blake Penner also had a couple points and now has 18-11-29 in just 8 league games to lead the league.

It will be a breathe of fresh air next year when the Saskatchewan bantam leagues are all re-structured in to a North/South type league that will make it AAA caliber. Cause right now the AA teams really don't have much of a chance at westerns. Prince Albert might have the best shot in a while this year due to having Miles Warkentine coming over from Melfort and Yaremchuk coming in from Tisdale. Not to mention some very strong 97's to go with Duret, Harris.

In other action of note, Rhett Gardner scored 4 goals in a Moose Jaw 6-2 win last week. Gardner is a sure fire top prospect who has WHL written all over him. Look for him to continue to excel.

Last night in the Centre Four Hockey League, the Prince Albert Pirates skated by the Melfort Mustangs 8-6. Rylan Freed, who we have as a 3-4 round pick scored 5 goals for Melfort. Ryan Duret continues his 5 point per game pace in that league with 3 goals and 2 assists. He now has 18-23-41 in 9 games played! Lance Yaremchuk had 3 goals and 1 assist. Lance now has 13-6-19 in just 6 games. Freed now has 13 goals in 8 games which is 8 more than anyone else on his team.

Thats all for now.

Wong/Chartier go EXTREME against Calgary Bronks

Last night the Airdrie Xtreme recorded their largest goal output scoring 11 times vs. the Calgary Bronks in AMBHL action Wednesday evening. A couple player in particular had huge nights. Colby Chartier scored a game league high this season of 5 goals, while Tyler Wong who we project to be a first rounder, scored a goal and a whopping 6 assists for 7 points! Connor Boyd also had a nice night racking up 4 points, and Mack Bauer scored a pair of goals. Wong now has 43 points in just 14 games, placing him 3rd in league scoring. Perhaps the Calgary Bronks had the trip to the Abbotsford tournament on their minds?

November 24, 2010 newsletter is now ready!

In this edition of the newsletter, major adjustments made to the 96 born rankings. After attending the Medicine Hat tournament, we had a chance to discuss the list with various director of player personal people resulting in some changes at the top and some new additions. Included is a new #1 player.

We also take a look at the top 75 for the 97 born. Some players are really starting to assert themselves at the top.

I had a chance to speak with a Saskatchewan born kid who hopes to mirror his WHL brother's defensive while adding a bit more offence. He's on track.

Also, I spoke with a small, talented captain from the Calgary area whose size doesn't hold him back.

Last but certainly not least, a talented defenceman who took his game from Vancouver Island to the interior of BC to one of the best hockey programs in western Canada.

The Regina and Medicine Hat tournaments are now complete. We run down the all-stars and MVP's and winners.

Spruce Grove PAC suffers first loss of season!

Last night in the AMBHL, the Spruce Grove PAC Saints 13 game undefeated streak to start the season came to a crashing hault at the hands of Leduc by a score of 8-6. Braden Jakubowski led the attack with 3 goals and 1 assist while Liam Gregor chipped in with 4 assists. Spruce Grove got a pair of goals from Thomas Foster. Leduc is now 10-4 having outscored the opposition 82-40. Their +42 for goals scored vs goals allowed is tops in the league tied with the Calgary Bisons.

..................

In the PCAHA, the groupings are now complete and the first game of flight 1 took place last night with Seafair defeating Surrey 3-1. In flight 2 action Richmond beat North Delta 9-6.

Of course the BIG Medicine Hat tournament starts up on Thursday, so it will be a relatively quieter weekend across most bantam leagues.

Sunday news...

First off, we'll take a look at the tournament going on in Ladner, BC where the semi-finals are now set. Yesterday Seafair rolled over Mission 8-2 to advance tot he semi-finals. Tyler Sandhu had a goal and 2 assists, while Dawydiak had 2 goals and 1 assist. Other winners in the quarters were Langley who thumped Richmond 12-1, Surrey over JDF 6-2 and Semiahmoo over South Delta 2-1. So Seafair will take on Langley, while Surrey and Semiahmoo will meet up.

The top 10 scorers to this point:
1 Elvis Jansons 7 - Richmond 4 6 4 10 2.5 0
2 Kyle Raymond 18 - Langley 4 3 7 10 2.5 2
3 Ryan Rensby 8 - Langley 4 6 3 9 2.3 0
4 Cole Pickup 96 - JDF 3 5 4 9 3.0 0

10 Mathew Bradley 7 F Semiahmoo 4 4 2 6 1.5 3

.................................

In Regina, quarter-final action also took place. Here is a look at the Results:
Prince Albert 6 Melfort 1
Regina Senators 4 Saskatoon Bandits 2
Swift Current 5 Weyburn 4
Humboldt 4 Saskatoon Stallions 3

So Prince Albert will take on the Regina Senators and Swift Current will battle Humboldt in what should be a great game.

The Saskatoon Maniacs will play the Saskatoon Outlaws in the "B" Final.

................................

Once again in the AMBHL yesterday the stars were shining brightly. Tanner Macmaster scored yet another hat-trick giving him 32 goals in 15 games. The Bisons have 17 games remaining this year so that puts him on track for about 68 goals, the league record belongs to Ty Rattie who scored 75 in the 07-08 season. Brayden Point kept pace with 4 assists in Saturday's game. Point is just 3 points behind Macmaster for the scoring race in which the two players are really pulling away with.

Lethbridge's Cavin Leth fired 4 goals home yesterday in Red Deer, leading his team to a 7-4 win. Leth from leth now has 22 goals in 15 games. His 22 goals place him 2nd in the goal scoring race. Leth from leth also has 58 PIM's which place him 4th in that category. Brendan Benson continues to be hindered by an injury.

Ryley Rissling and Nathyn Mortlock continue their good play of late with each picking up a goal and 2 assists, leading MH to a 6-5 win over Okotoks. Okotoks' attack was once again led by Connor Bleackley with 3 goals and young 97 born Mason McCarty with 3 assists, who assisted on all of Bleackley's goals. Bleackley, the one man show from Okotoks is 4th in league scoring with 18-14-32 in 12 games.

.................................

In Saskatchewan, it was pretty quiet due to most teams (24 to be exact) taking part in the Regina tournament. However, in the Centre Four Hockey League Unity outscored Meadow Lake 9-8. 97 born star Keifer Hintz had 1 goal and 4 assists, while Wyatt Hinson scored 3 times for Meadow Lake.

.................................

In Manitoba, the Winnipeg Hawks continue their asent up the league standings with a 6-5 win over the Winnipeg Monarchs. The Hawks who are now 7-0-1-1 have leap-frogged the Winnipeg Sharks 7-1-0. Adam Brooks for the Hawks has now opened up a 6 point lead in the scoring race with 25 points in 8 games. Brooks also leads the league with 14 goals. The Sharks lone loss came the other day in a 10-5 loss to the Winnipeg Warriors. The Sharks are without 97 born phenom Dallas Miller but the highlight of the game had to be Warriors 5'10 forward Brett Masterton who fired in 6 goals!!

Saturday.....Queenville breaks out

In the AMBHL, John Queenville for SSAC scored 4 goals and assisted on 2 others en route to an 8-3 win over Edmonton CAC. His line-mate, 97 born Giorgio Estephan picked up 5 assists and 1 goal in the victory. Queenville now leads all North scorers with 27 pts in 11 games. Estephan now leads all 97 born players in the AMBHL with 20 pts in just 11 games, two ahead of the Bison Nick Merkely.

Elsewhere in the AMBHL, it was Leduc all over Edmonton KC 7-1. Liam Gregor who is one of our fastest risers so far this year led the way with 2 goals and 3 assists, Kord Pankewicz had a pair of goals, while Braden Jakubowski had a 4 point night. Nick Loose had the lone goal for KC.

..................................

Taking a look over at the Tim Jardine Tournament going on in Ladner, BC. The round robin portion of the schedule is now complete with Jaun De Fuca and Surrey both winning their pools. Juan De Fuca went 2-0-1, while Surrey was 1-0-2. The only winless team was Richmond who was 0-3-0. Somewhat surprising is that Seafair was only 1-1-1 with 8 goals scored. Seafair was expected to roll through the tournament without the likes of Kamloops, POE, BWC, Cloverdale and Abbotsford taking part but that wasn't the case. Tyler Sandhu was only able to muster 1-3-4 in the 3 games while first round prospect Alec Dawydiak just had 1-0-1 in 3 games. The tournament leader so far is Elvis Jansons of Richmond who has scored 6-4-10 in just 3 games. Coughlin and Guiney from Juan De Fuca each scored 5 goals in the 3 games so far.

Elimation action go's today.
