There is just over a week of action remaining in the SSBHL regular and Balgonie and Weyburn continue to win league game action. But first from Friday night, the Notre Dame Hounds played another exhibition game, this time against a very young Yorkton team and came away with a 6-1 victory. Josh Uhrich had 1-3-4 and Ben Duperreault 1-2-3 to lead the way. Duperreault's 48 points are just 6 behind Penner for the team lead. Josh Uhich now has 41 points in 20 games and a team leading 53 pims.
Notre Dame played Saturday as well vs. another very young team, against Melville. The Hounds outshot the Millionaires 29-13 and won the game 4-1. Leading the way for the Hounds was Ben Duperreault once again with 1-1-2 and Jeremiah Addison had a pair of helpers. Tyler Krekelwich scored the lone goal for Melville.
On to league play from Saturday, Weyburn defeated Swift Current 4-2. Weyburn now has a league leading 29 pts at 14-4-1 and hold a narrow 1 point lead over 2nd place Balgonie who have 3 games in hand. Swift Current is having a good season at 11-5-2 but with just 2 games remaining, don't have a chance at top spot in the league standings. Nicholas Pouliot was once again the catalyst for Weyburn with 2-1-3 and for Swift Current, Tim Vanstone notched a helper. Both Pouliot and Vanstone are tied for the league lead with 43 pts. A far cry from last season when Cory Milette, Ty McLean and Tim McGauley all put up nearly 100 points.
In a game between a pair of teams who have had their struggles this season, the Regina Canucks skated by Moose Jaw 5-2. Moose Jaw is 4-13-1 and Regina Canucks are 5-11-2. Brody Neilsen, Drew Bundus and Taylor Hoedel each had 1-1-2 for Regina. For Moose Jaw, Rhett Gardner scored both goals and now has 19-11-30, he has a 13 point and 7 goal lead over team-mate Braydon Delorme for team leads in those categories.
It was the Balgonie Prairie Storm running their record to 13-1-2 with a 10-4 victory over the 7-10-3 Regina Hurricanes. Jordan Ross had a huge game with 2-4-6 and outstanding 97 born Jayden Halbgewachs had 3-2-5 who were 3/5 on the PP. Regina was led by team leading scorer Mitchell Lipon with 3 assists. Lipon, the brother of Kamloops Blazer forward J.C. Lipon is in the top 5 in scoring with 38 points and is 2nd in league goals with 23.

Of course in the Centre Four Hockey League, game 2 of the provincial league final go's today in Prince Albert and the Pirates are in a must win situation after losing to Ryan Pilon and Warman back on Wednesday night.
A league game was played this afternoon in which Melfort tied Humboldt 6-6. First round prospect Reid Gardiner scored 5 goals for Humboldt and Rylan Freed scored and added two assists.

The Saskatoon Maniacs received a "bye" due to finishing 1st place in the provincial standings at 10-4-4. They will play the 3rd seed in the next round. The Saskatoon Outlaws have advanced. Interesting to note that league scoring leader Kolten Olynek didn't score a goal in either game.
Tyler Olsen scored 3 times for the Frostbite and team leading scorer Jesse Shynkaruk scored twice in the 2 losses.

Alberta
In the AMBHL from Saturday, it was Airdrie continueing to turn it up at the right time of year with an 11-2 victory over Red Deer Black. Tyler Wong had himself another huge game with 3-3-6. Wong all of a sudden leads the AMBHL in goals (44), points (91). Mackenzie Bauer had 5 goals and 2 assists. Bauer is now 6th in league scoring with 32-34-66. 98 born Tyler Steenbergan had 1-1-2 for Red Deer who gave up 51 shots. The Xtreme now have a 6 point lead for first place at 21-8-1 over Red Deer White. Red Deer holds a game in hand.
St. Albert keeps pace with SSAC and stays tied at the top with 49 points after a 6-1 win over 3-27-0 Grand Prairie. Brett Smyth and Andrew kary each scored 1-1-2 and defenseman Guy Butlin continues to pick up points from the blueline with a pair of assists. Butlin, who has one more game to play this year now has 3-13-16. Kary leads the team in goals with 21 in 32 games. St. Albert outshot Grand Prairie 49-16.
Red Deer White picked up a 5-4 win over Okotoks to stay within striking distance of Airdrie. Projected first round prospect Ty Mappin led the way with 2-1-3. Mappin is 4th in league scoring with 34-33-67 in 29 games. He has 32 more pts than anyone else on his team. Connor Bleackley once again scored for Okotoks who now sit at 7-20-3 and in last place in the ambhl south.
Finally from Saturday, Camrose defeated the 7-20-4 Fort Sask. Rangers 5-1. The Kodiaks are now 9-15-6 and sit 4th in their division and have now clinched a playoff spot while eliminating Fort Sask. in the process. Camrose will likely play Leduc in round one. Adam Ternes scored a pair of goals for Camrose, he now has 13. Captain Justin Kirkland picked up 1-1-2 and leads the team with 37 points, 5 more than Ternes.

In the Calgary AA bantam league, it was the Calgary Rangers defeating the last place Calgary Canucks 8-0. League scoring leader Braylan Schmyr had 1-1-2 and Anthony Orubor had a pair of goals. Orubor has 20 goals which is 6 back of league goal leader Schmyr who has 26.
The Calgary Royals Blue ran their league leading record to 24-4-0 with a 4-0 shutout over the 3rd place 13-10-5 Calgary Royals Gold. Cameron Anklewich who is 2nd in league scoring had 1-1-2 as did Logan Ferguson. Tyler Van Vliet turned aside 21 shots for the goose egg. Van Vliet is the league leader in goals against at 1.89 and has a .924 save percentage.
The 2nd place Calgary Blazers defeated the 6th place Calgary Blackhawks 8-2. Austin Wagner had 2-2-4 for the Blazers. Wagner now has 20 points in 21 games. Nicholas Patterson turned aside 31/33 shots in the win.
By the way, Jagger White scored 2 more times on Saturday for the Peewee Medicine Hat Venom and now has 111 goals in 26 games.

Regarding your reasoning for discussing the 97's who play AA in Calgary---- why don't you talk about the 97's in Calgary (and surrounding area) who play AAA who are clearly better than the 2 you mentioned from AA?...one of the players couldn't crack the Bison lineup (the #1 ranked team in AB) while the other couldn't crack the Royals, another team ranked top 10 in Alberta.

There are several 97's who are mentioned on the site daily. We also supply a top 75 list which has many 97's on it who play in the ambhl. Mason McCarty is actually someone we will be profiling pretty soon.
Bisons might be ranked #1, but we'll see who represents the province.

So a goalie in AA did very well against other AA players? the majority of these players are not very strong....they are a loooooong way from AAA. He is not even the best goalie on his team.
To each their own. From what I saw and what the stats say he doesn't look too shabby. Neither does the other guy though. Unfortunately I haven't seen him (the other goalie) play yet.

You are right when it comes to the top players in AAA but don't kid yourself the middle to lower end AAA are interchangeable with the top AA players. You will get a wake up when you are not drafted and end up in the 15 year old league not dominating. I would think the reason western Elite talks about Calgary AA is because they know it is a stronger league than some fringe AAA leagues.
You are right that Calgary AA is better than some fringe AAA leagues but remember all those AA players in Calgary tried out for AAA teams and did not make them....I am comparing the AA players in Calgary to the AAA teams they tried out for...not some fringe league...again the 2 previously mentioned are playing AA because they did not make their repective AAA teams...its quite simple, really
in my opinion, having watched all of the AA teams and AAA teams in Calgary, if you swiched the lower to middle end players from AAA with the top of the AA teams in their quadrant you would have a much inferior product...I am sorry to break this to you but at least some of the kids in AAA will get drafted...only one player in Calgary AA drafted last year, I think ( E. Elaschuk?)

Here is the truth the best players playing in aa Calgary.They are good players but not Elite lets look at some Elite players from Calgary Area Martin Duke Point MacMaster Wong Mumby all of these players played aaa bantam as 13 year olds and did Well Point scored plus 20 goals as did Wong MacMaster was rookie of the year Martin was a powerplay guy as a 13 year old.Most of these guys will go top few rounds.I would not cut any player or league down but the web site is called Elite Hockey Prospects.
That said I feel alot of the lower end players on aaa would be very good in aa and the aa players would not fair as well in aaa that is why they were cut.The leading scorer in aa bantam Calgary was a cut from aaa Bisons wasnt he?
I dont think that saying a guy on AA is good enough for AAA just because he got cut. Players sometimes are unrecognizable at the end of the year when compared to the beginning. Some become stronger and surpass expectations whereas others may not reach them.
26 goals in AA is not something to start screaming about.Really?Maybe WEHP should mention all the AA or T2 league players who are 97.Im sure there must be quite a few.What do these players do in Spring hockey would be a better assumption at this point,till next year anyway
i dont know if you've ever watched this goalie, but a goalie by the last name of Macdonald playing for Coquitlam A1 in PCAHA flight 2 is absolutaly amzing. In burnaby xmas tourney against kamloops in quarters, who stopped 76 outta 83 shots en route to a 7-2 loss. Throughout the entire season, he has had a GAA lower than 2 and knows how to keep his team in it. That kamloops game is just one game, but he does it all the time. unfortuantely his team is not as a good, andthe team is i think 4th last in flight 2. Just an interesting side note!
When it comes to Banatm AA hockey in Alberta you cannot compare a Top End Guy in AA to a Low End Guy in AAA. One could argue that there are some bubble kids on any given team that could have been placed in AA and like wise that a AA guy could have played AAA. But don't kid yourself that taking a kid out of AA in Alberta and placing him in AAA in Alberta that the kid would dominate in AAA, not realistic or probable. Too many parents on this website fishing for their kids. Also, I do believe that a 14 year old in Alberta playing Bantam AA still has a great chance to be a top end player, of course there are many reasons for this comment, most of you know these reasons. Please do not take my comments as bashing any Bantam AA players in Alberta.
No one said that the AA players would dominate in AAA. If you look at the players that have been called up to AAA Bisons and AAA Royals due to injuries, they have done just fine. Why is that? If you think the quadrant coaches get it right each time you are living in a dream world. Some kids don't hit their peak physically and mentally until they are 17. Need I remind you, Jarome Iginla never got drafted in Bantam and the kid has done alright for himself. Too many make AAA Bantam and think they have made it.... long way to go boys!
9:40 am - you are over thinking this blog, no brainer that coaches make mistakes when it comes to personnel, coaching would be a seperate thread. You make the comment about AA Calgary kids playing AAA in Calgary, I'm not sure how you qualify to say " they have done fine" not my spin at all.
There are lots of examples of kids not playing AAA or not being drafted into the Dub or being drafted late into the NHL or not drafted at all. Of course it is a numbers game, having your kid play Bantam AAA, followed be being drafted to the WHl followed by being drafted into NHL is a nice path. Any former professional hockey player would conceed that he knows of players that were more than capable of playing a certain level (high) and not getting the chance for many reason(s) most of which are unfair, that's life. My point(s) are this;
No kid from Bantam AA will get drafted to the WHL - not the end of the world.
Most of the kids playing Bantam AA & AAA will be playing together next year in Minor Midget AAA. (Bad league by the way) again seperate thread.
As 16 year olds I would go with prevoius history/#'s and say 98% of the 14 year olds playing Bantam AA hockey in Calgary will never play at the Whl level/equavilent or higher.
By your comments and tone I can tell you the following;
your kid is 14 years old
your kid plays Bantam AA
your kid is not judged fairly ( in your world)

My kid is having a great year and loves his team. You make some excellent points in your post and you obviously have a lot of experience within the system. All I'm saying is that it is unfortunate that people feel the need to bash certain 97's because they are playing aa as a first year. Personally I think the coaches are doing them a favor from a development aspect as they probably see more ice and can lead their teams rather than sitting on the bench. When I see guys bashing leagues (Ie Vancouver Island) it screams of INSECURITY which tells me their kid is a fringe AAA player and they feel threatened.

I agree with you regarding the AA league for first year Bantams, good league more importantly you hope for good coaching.If someone is bashing it, who cares!!! It is a very long road! As far as the Vancouver Island league goes I'am bang on! Seriously, the numbers and infrastructure does not exist on the island, it's true.
i say all 97 prospects should be talked about if talked about at all. How come Matthew Barzel, Adam Musil and Justin Szeto are never talked about? These are all top ten picks.

What you have to remember is that both of those kids have been called up to AAA, and got a considerable amount of ice when they were. From what I watched, they both kept up to the speed, and I thought they were on the team until I was told.
534? I nevr hear about them in league play, all i hear about is alberta prospects. Barzel is #1 in 2012, i'd say szeto will be 3rd or 4th and Adam Musil will go 10th-15th.

Okay, BWC and Kamloops it is. Are you willing to say there are no other teams that have an idividual or two who play to that elite level?
There are many elite players on other teams but they are rarely mentioned...only the scores of the also rans from the desperate parents...it would be cool to read about which players are doing well...and not rip the ones who aren't but instead we read lots of lower mainland scores form the B leagues...this is Elite prospects so let's read about them..that is cool but who cares about playoffs for the B's? even if a list could be posted with some peoples opinions---they are just lists and everyone has a different opinion...compare last years lists on all theses sites with the actual draft and its always different--just peoples opinions, but the B stuff does not belong on here

the pcaha can't be called AA because they have much more restrictions like the minor hockey teams having to have players live in certain areas unlike alberta. Im sure stuff would be a lot different if they had no boundaries. I also believe that POE is a very good team, right up their with kamloops and BWC.

He picked apart kids in Medicine hat...Was named tounrmanet MVP at Burnaby XMAS tourney. That is amazing. BWC has 3 top 5 picks for 2012!!! Can't wait to seem them. Barzel is very quick, do you see those head fakes and quick shifts he does on the breakout. IMHO, he is like Patrick kane Jr. as when kane scored cup winner, he did headfakes to beat the D from philly and barzel does that exact move.
3 42 please explain to us what "B" league is? Is that where your kid plays, no wait, of course he plays for the best AAA league ever. Stupid people these days. Thee reason alberta teams have beter records are cause they play in a 22 team league and you know how many teams just absolutely are not good at all.
I have seen posts on here and then they disappear and then people call others stupid and it stays on if some get to voice their opinions then why can't others? Some of this stuff is offensive and it stays up but other stuff is up for a few hours and gets taken down The whole Barzel thing is so ridiculous like people have something invested in him personally If some don't like an opinion then fine but caling people stupid is wrong All kinds of superstars at this age disappear for many reasons If someone is calling a league your sone/daughter plays for a B league then tht is their opinion no matter how wrong they are Why call others stupid? There are quite a few good players from vancouver island this year such as Cole Pickup, Nick Gomerich, Jordan Parmar, and Garrett Stankoven to name a few.
I have been reading all the posts. Appears to be the writings of adults and not 13 and 14 year olds. Maybe the boys are just focusing on playing, enjoying the game and getter better. Maybe as parents, we should remember this instead of trying to boost self esteem through the actions of our children. At his age it is their game not ours.
