Friday, February 18, 2011

The AMBHL playoffs resumed Thursday night with a trio of games.

In Spruce Grove, the underdog Camrose Kodiaks skated away with a 5-4 victory. The outcome may come as a suprise to some people given the fact that Spruce Grove finished in 1st and had 21 more points than Camrose during the regular season. However, the season series was just 2-1 for Spruce Grove and they outscored them only 11-9 which must've given Camrose a level of confidence. Leading the way for Camrose were Cloutier, Ternes and Kirkland all with 1-1-2. Kirkland led Camrose during the season series with 1-3-4 in the 3 games. The game winner came from Jordan Holmes with just 5:57 remaining in the 3rd period. Goalie Travis Child turned aside 29/33 for the win. Child had a .906 save percentage in the season series vs. Spruce Grove. For Spruce Grove it was Michael Cardinal scoring a pair of goals while Thomas Foster had a pair of assists. Cardinal led all players with 1-3-4 in the season series. Matthew Meek-White stopped just 16/21 shots he faced. Meek-White let in 6 goals on 24 shots in his regular season matchup with Camrose while counterpart J.T. Barlett had a .930 save percentage. Game 2 go's Saturday in Camrose.

In Airdrie, a huge shocker in that the Red Deer Rebels Black defeated the heavily favored and top seed in the division 5-4 in OT. Airdrie had won the season series 3-0-0 and outscored Red Deer Black 20-2 in the three games they played so it seemed atleast on paper that they should be able to role over Red Deer Black. Get this, leading the way for Red Deer Black was 1998 born Tyler Steenbergen with 3 goals, which also included the OT game winner. Steenbergen had 13-9-22 in 33 regular season games, not bad for a 98 born who should be playing peewee hockey! Dylan Houston finished with 1-2-3. Houston was the team scoring leader this season with 14-16-30 in 33 games. Tyler Wong led Airdrie with 1-2-3. Wong was 2nd in the ambhl scoring race this year with 101 points and in the season series against Red Deer Black, Wong had 6-7-13 in 3 games. Shots were 34 apeice. Game 2 go's Saturday afternoon in Red Deer and game 3 if needed go's back in Airdrie on Sunday.

Finally from Thursday night it was Red Deer White all over Lethbridge 6-0 in Red Deer. Lethbridge had won the season series 2-0-1 but Red Deer was the higher ranked team heading in. Red Deer White was led by team scoring leader Ty Mappin with 2-2-4. Mappin had 37-34-71 in the regular season which was 34 more points than anyone else on his team. Shots on goal were 49-22 for Red Deer White. Goalie Jayden Sittler turned aside all 22 shots for the shutout. Red Deer can wrap things up tonight in Lethbridge.

--------------

In the SSBHL from Wednesday night, the Balgonie Prairie Storm who will play the Saskatoon Maniacs for the right to play the Prince Albert Pirates in the SHA Bantam Provincial final upped their regular season record to 15-1-2 with a 9-2 victory over Moose Jaw. Jordan Ross, who has been on quite the tear as of late scored 4 times in the victory and 97 born Jayden Halgewachs continues to improve by scoring 1-2-3. Jordan Ross now has 16-21-37 in 18 league games. Halbgewachs, who should be a high pick in the 2012 bantam draft has 35 points. For Moose Jaw, Rhett Gardner who has mainly been a one man show in the Jaw scored a goal. Gardner is expected to be picked in the top couple rounds in the draft. Gardner has scored 25 of Moose Jaw's 70 goals and has been in on 39 of the 70 goals or 56% of the teams goals. Moreover, he has scored 36% of his teams goals.

I heard Abby won 6 to 0 last night over Surrey. Anybody at the game?

Spruce Groves goaltending is their weak link, when it is good they can beat anyone, when it is bad anyone can beat them. Too bad they are a pretty good team but it is hard to overcome bad goals.

Airdrie lost, what happened?

12.42PM. Its called shutting down a one line hockey team.

Houston and Steenbergen looked better then Wong and Bauer last night... Steenbergen had the game tieing goal which was on a 2 on 1 houston was the one who feathered the pass over to him for a open net!

comment 1 , I was. There was no willcox and frisen played with a injured hand. Meyer returned to the lineup, but seemed rusty after like 2 weeks. Surrey played bad except for the usual tandem on defence of 2 4 21 who were only minus 1. They other 3 really did not do good. Virtananen had 2 goals a flew around teh ice, very dangerous.

Airdrie may bounce back over Black and if they do I think they will have there hands full with White no easy ride for the Extreme for the first time in years. Wong played 40 mins a game trying to win a scoring race and they have bagged that line. It is really to bad Wong is a great player but not a Machine. Black may have the recipie for sucsess in this one

40 min, let's not carried away now.

The Royals were no different with Duke, and look at where they are heading. More likely to lose today than Airdrie. Mind you, Wong scored a heck of a lot more points than Duke, and many other players that saw double shifting all year.

I talked to a parent and Willcox was sick and same with Meyer. Freisen played but with no hand injury , he got cleared.

One more Abby win and we can stop hearing about how good Surrey never was!!!

Its going be over soon, you can hear the excuses.

Go Hawks!

i saw him take his glove off at the bench. he still had some metal thing and it was all wrapped up. he played very well though. his linemates seemed to have an offgame but he looked good.

They are a one line team with 3 defenceman who can play. When those guys aren't playing, they're no good.

The ref was just absolutaly brutal by favouring abby. That is what happens when the stupid league gives you a 1 day notice to get refs. it seemed like the ref thought he was reffing Atom AA.

Royals just beat NE 11-4. Unbelievable how different Royals taem from Game 1 to Game 2. Dominated. Both goalies in game chased.

Red Deer Black defeated the Extreme! Looks like the sleeping Black team had Airdre right where they wanted them! Stay tuned for a all out Red Deer WAR in the next round.

That is why you don't play one line to death, you need balanced line up to win in the playoffs!!!

Anonymous said...

Well when Surrey has their 3 top forwards not playing .... There going to suck .. And they did on thursday!

Anonymous said...

WOW! Camrose at home to win the series and got crushed. No darkhorse here.

Anonymous said...

"Too bad Eggins and Wilkins couldnt play for Airdrie."

What does this comment mean?

Anonymous said...

Royals win 5 -2 today.

Anonymous said...

NE outshot first game 35-13 or something. Lose 2nd game 11-4. I'd say NE lucky to still be in this. Today shouldnt be close.

Anonymous said...

Agreed it will not be close, shots really do not indicate paly when comes to the Royals - scoring chances for and against are a better indicater. Royals will win today.

Anonymous said...

BWC 2 NSWC 1

Anonymous said...

4 overtimes... not very close?

Anonymous said...

7:08 the Royals outplayed and outscored you guys, period! Have a fun spring.

Anonymous said...

no worries.... I will try to be the first one to tell you to have a great spring when the royals are swept by the bisons... but if I have moved on, let me be the first to wish you the same...
