Valentine's Day Notes....

Manitoba
Starting off in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA league, the Winnipeg Hawks got back to their winning way with a pair of victories against the two last place teams in the division.

First off, they began the weekend with a 7-2 victory over Brandon. Brandon is now 2-26-1 and sit in last place. For Winnipeg, it was Adam Brooks scoring his 46th and 47th goals of the season and Dallas Starodub adding his 22nd and 23rd. Ingimundsen picked up 3 assists from defense for the Hawks who improved their record to 23-2-1. For Brandon, it was team scoring leader Brett Kitt with 1-1-2 in the loss.

Brandon was back in action on Saturday against another of the Winnipeg teams in playing the Monarchs. The Monarchs erupted for 7 2nd period goals en route to the 8-0 victory. That win pushed the Monarchs in to a 3rd place tie with the Winnipeg Warriors and a chance to avoid playing the Winnipeg Hawks in the first round. For the Monarchs it was Ezra Hall scoring twice, giving him 14 goals. Daniel Kennedy had 1-2-3. Brandon falls to 2-27-1 and Winnipeg are 14-9-2.

Finally over the weekend in the Winnipeg league it was the Winnipeg Hawks running their record to 24-2-1 in defeating the 6-19-2 Interlake Lightning 10-2. Adam Brooks had 2-3-5, pushing his league leading totals to 49-33-82. His 49 goals have him 18 goals ahead of 97 born Dallas Miller and his 82 points are 29 ahead of team-mate Dane Shioler. Gritty forward Nico Lisi had 1-3-4 and now has 11-25-36. For Interlake it was once again Clay Tait scoring both goals, giving him 13-15-28.

-------

A look over at the Eastman Bantam AA League and we see the Southwest Jets running away with things in their hopes to make it to provincials. They are currently at 18-1-0 and average well over 5 goals per game. Alex Tetrault is leading the way with 19-29-48 The only other team playing above .500 hockey are the Morden Hawks who are 14-4-1. They have allowed just 29 goals in 19 games this season.

In the Parkisimo Hockey League, it is the Russell Rams led by Jayce Hawryluk and David Dunn running away with the standings at 18-0-0. Both Hawryluk and Dunn should go in the first few rounds of the bantam draft. Nipping at the heals of Russell are Elkhorn who are 17-2-0 this season. Of course Elkhorn is led by the Sanheim Twins. If you remember the Sanheim twins joined Russell for a tournament in Saskatoon over the New Year's Day weekend and really were successful.

Saskatchewan
In the South Sask Bantam League, it was the Balgonie Prairie Storm punching their ticket for a date vs. either the Saskatoon Outlaws or the Maniacs with a 4-2 victory over the Regina Senators. The Prairie Storm who hold the league's best regular season record were led by Jordan Ross who scored 3 times and 97 born Jayden Halbgewachs with 2 assists. Halbgewachs leads all playoff scorers with 5-7-12 in 6 games while Ross is 4th with 5-5-10. An area of concern despite the win for Balgonie was going 0/13 on the power-play. The winner of the Balgonie/Saskatoon series will go on to play the power house Prince Albert Pirates in the provincial Final.

For those of your interested, the Sask First dates and rosters are now available on the SHA website. I plan on doing a more in depth look at the 8 zones a bit later this week. In the mean time, here is the link to the rosters: http://players.sha.sk.ca/sask-first/12-u16-sask-first-bantam

Just a quick note on the Medicine Hat Bantam AAA team,
This team's coach's and manager are an embarassment. Not professional, you should teach your kids how to play hockey. To have a low skill level is one thing, but to have your kids out on the ice acting morons is another, What a brutal program!!!!

Western Elite said...

I realize you may be frustrated but please refrain from calling the kids "morons" and the negative name calling in regards to the program please.

Anonymous said...

I heard that the Bison's ran the score up 18-1 vs Med Hat, that also is not good sportsmanship or was that to help Point win the scoreing??

Anonymous said...

2 comments - I said acting like morons, Med Hats conduct over the last few weeks was shamefull. Running up the score comment, did you see the game? I did, lots of powerplay goals for the Bisons as Med Hat spent the GAME in the box for a brutal attempt at playing hockey. On a regular night the Bisons would put 8 - 10 goals on Med Hat, the score reads 18 because of Med Hats actions.
By the way Med Hat should probaly put up the score sheet, probaly won't though, it's kinda of embarassing.

9:26am - do you what does running up the score mean? Does it mean to all of sudden not to follow a game plan? Does mean to make an extra pass when you should'nt?

Your question" was that to help Point win the scoring?"
do you know how many goals Point got that game ----- Zero, nice try - Get Informed!!!!!

Anonymous said...

relax guys, they are 14

Anonymous said...

they are 14 year old kids that should know the difference between right and wrong, That being said the Med Hats coaching staff should be displined.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see the Bison Med Hat game. During all those power plays did the Bison's happen to put other players on the ice other than the standard 5 that always go on? Good opportunity to let some other players develope.

Anonymous said...

If it was all about getting Point more points then the coaches would not have simply rolled the lines but put him out for a majority of the time---this game and score was dictated by Med Hat and its play on the ice...true the kids should know the difference but the coaching staff allowed them to act like they did and by not discouraging it implicitly encouraged it...the coaches actions towards one of the Bison parents is why he should be suspended, not for his brutal game management

Anonymous said...

everyone got pp time and pk time the lines were rolled...Martin even sat out the last part of the game so there was no loading up

Anonymous said...

10:06 am - I agree with most of what you said, the one exception the coach's should be accountable for letting and/or encouraging their kids to run around like crazies on the ice, that is the most important issue. A parent coach incident should be addressed also.

Anonymous said...

They did address it... It's called penalties. What other sanctions would you recommend? Did anyone get injured?

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Alberta needs Sportsmanship points like PCAHA...lol

Anonymous said...

that is what I said...by not discouraging it he encouraged it...I didn't think I had to post the obvious conclusion he should be held accountable as all coches are accountable as is part of their job

Thanks again for the forum- very informative when cooler less bias heads prevail.
Very curious to see that the AMBHL South is quite dominant in the top end of the scoring.
Those are obviously very good bantam players- is it simply coincidence or would they do the same regardless of which division whether North or South.
I guess the second part of the question/comment : Is the North and South significantly different in competition or style of play .
I am not asking who has the better team (N or S) just if the overall level of competition is a factor??

Anonymous said...

10:20am - it's called intent, your right somtimes a penalty will suffice. Sometimes as a coach you need to coach and say they the way the game is being played is not right. Seriously, does this need to be explained. I suppose it is one of things where the 1996 kids from Med Hat have been getting their asses handed to them for years, regardless of league.

Anonymous said...

Actually Point was not out all the time at all. Point was busy taking his balls from his throat after being speared in the groin Cross check from behind and slashed across the head. Point played alot less time this year then his counter part from Airdrie so lets not go there.Fact its both players should be commended on breaking the 100 point mark.

Comment to 1041 I think in the 96 age group there has always been a difference in the style of play from north to south more so Edmonton Calgary Edmonton has alway played a more physical brand low scoring style of game and the Calgary teams were always very offensive.Just look at the Jr Flames and nas Flames were high flying and nas would slow them down.At the end both styles and player were great to watch

Anonymous said...

Airdrie has been running up scores for the last month

Thank you for having this blog. A little disappointed in some of the posters though. I thought that this was about the prospects and maybe where we have missed a look at some kid. I don't know the situation in the Hat, but there can be a lot more than the coaches at work here, really, there could be some bad seeds in the middle of it and whether we like it or not, good does not rub off and overwhelm bad, not sure why that is, but it has always been that way.

I guess this is why the top teams check out the parents and family so closely, so that they can determine what happens when things go sideways. When bad stuff happens, character is not created, it is revealed.

getting over a 100 points in one season when you play weaker teams is not a true sense of what a player can do. Take away those games and the points that who ever scored and then do your comparison. As far as running up a score...well get use to it because if you watch any type of hi level hockey and team there is no backing down ever period. We always looked at the players who scored the tough goals against the tough teams not the weaker. Your comment about the WPG Hawks being back to their winning ways almost made me fall of my chair as you then stated that they played against the 2 bottom teams and bragged up who scored etc....BIG DEAL I tell you I'm more impressed with the players who scored against them.

Anonymous said...

really why even have your top players in a game like that if not for one thing but adding to their stats. I totally agree 12:37 who cares about those games. Anyone who brags about the player or how many goals he scored is a little nuts as far as I am concerned. Whatever ever happened to respect for the game and the people who play it. Parents if you are living through your child's hockey....get a life and let them have theirs after all it's them playing not you. KIDS PLAYING the key words power trippers.

Comment to 1122. I think your comment is on the money. I don't get to see the Calgary teams-besides the Bisons and Royals at tourneys.
Last years league final (Fort Sask/Bisons) would probably be a perfect example of the two different styles.
I was very curious as to the type of games the Calgary teams have during league play compared to the North in General.

Anonymous said...

1122 To be honest the Calgary league I believe is the toughest Division It boosts the 5 best team aggragate I would say the weakest would be South Central 3 strong teams
Airdrie and Red Deer white being the only two teams out of that division this is why Wong and Mappin score so often very easy schedule 4 games vs med hat red deer black and Lethbridge 2 vs Grand Prarie

Anonymous said...

Well not exactly They play each of the other south teams 3 times for 27 games plus each rural north team once for 33 games.

Anonymous said...

still a much weaker schedule

Anonymous said...

Can someone update how the other zones play-offs are going in BC, such as the Island, Kootenays etc?
What teams will likely be at BC Provincials?...

Anonymous said...

kamloops, BWC, abby (Host) for sure. Not sure about other interior and island teams. The huge question is though who is that other PCAHA team will be. Either Sefair, Surrey or Cloverdale.

Anonymous said...

I donno Kelowna could give Kamloops a run for their money

Anonymous said...

I thought Westside said they were going to be the upset?

Seriously though, hand it to Westside and go Kelowna go!

Anonymous said...

Good for Westside to declare up. Wonder if they will have the stones to do it next year, too.

Anonymous said...

with the westside group next year,I doubt they will play tier 1.they seem to be in the middle somewhere between the two tiers.
