The AMBHL playoffs are now fully underway with half of the series having begun.
In Edmonton, the SSAC took a 1-0 series lead over Edmonton CAC in a battle of 1st vs. 4th. SSAC rolled to an easy 7-2 victory, out-shooting CAC 50-16 in the process. Riley Simpson, the son of former NHL player and HNIC color man Craig Simpson led the way with 2-1-3. All indication are that the younger Simpson will be taking his talents south of the border. Simpson had 11 points in 4 games in the season series vs. CAC. Team scoring leader, John Quennville had 1-2-3. Quennville had 8-6-14 in 4 head to head meetings. 97 born Giorgio Estephen had 1-1-2. SSAC defenseman Kyle North received a 10 minute and a game misconduct in this one. Game 2 go's Friday at the CAC rink.
In Leduc, the Allen's Transport who lost the season series to Lloydminster 2-1, were able to score 9 times en route to a 9-4 convincing victory. In a game were the score was 4-1 after 2, Leduc erupted for 5 goals in the first 12 minutes of the 3rd to take a 9-2 lead and cruised from there. Leading the way for Leduc was team scoring leader Liam Gregor with 3-1-4. Gregor had 4 goals in 3 head to head matchups this year and finished 8th in league scoring with 30-38-68. Braden Jakubowski had 1-2-3 and defenseman Kord Pankewicz, who will be a first round pick in the bantam draft finished with 1-1-2. Leduc goalie Nolan Kruizenga turned aside 14/18 shots. For Lloydminster, defenseman Conner James had 2 goals to lead the way. James had 5-19-24 in the regular season and 5 assists in the 3 head to head matchups. Lloyminster welcomed back skilled 97 born forward Andrew Koep but he was held scoreless. Game 2 go's Saturday at the Lloyminster Civic Centre.
In Calgary, it was the lower ranked Calgary Northstar Sabres upsetting the Calgary Royals 3-2 in OT. The Royals won the season series 3-1-1 and were undefeated in the past 4 meetings. For the Northstar Sabres it was Justin Peers playing the role of hero scoring the OT winner just 50 seconds in to extra time. Peers also had 5 pts in 5 head to head meetings this year. Franco Colapaolo had 1-1-2. Northstar Sabres goalie Derek Mazil who played in all 5 head to head meetings and had a .902 save percentage turned aside 33/35 shots. For the Royals, it was Danton Oliver scoring both goals. Oliver had just 8 regular season goals. Kyle O'connor picked up a pair of helpers. Reid Duke was held off the scoresheet for the Royals and picked up a slashing and charging minor in the 3rd period. Game 2 go's Saturday afternoon in Calgary where the Northstar Sabres can wrap it up.
Finally, the Calgary Bisons rolled over the Calgary Bronks 8-2 in another 1st vs. 4th game. The Bisons were 4-0-1 in the season series and averaged 6 goals per game in the meetings. The Bisons were led by defenseman Brycen Martin who scored 2-2-4. Martin has a good chance to be selected in the first round of the bantam draft. Martin had 42 regular season points to lead all regular defenseman in the ambhl if you don't include Kord Pankewicz who played forward for a good chunk of the season. League scoring leader Brayden Point had 1-2-3 as did Tanner MacMaster. Point and MacMaster combined for 28 pts in the 5 head to head meetings vs. the Bronks in the regular season. Game 2 go's Saturday afternoon.
The Red Deer Black vs. Airdrie and Camrose vs. Spruce Grove series begin tonight. Same go's for Red Deer White vs. Lethbridge. Sherwood Park vs. St. Albert won't start until Saturday.

SSAC had their 7 goals spread over 6 players which keeps the other team on their toes as to which lines to cover.
List - How is Trey Tendler 50 spots lower then Keegan Milligan. Trey is a first three rounder big strong, Milligan is 4th on his team in scoring even with dad on the bench. Please give me your insight. One pays for subscription, one doesnt?
CAC has tanked downed the stretch, and will get blown out again on Friday.
Actually both parents pay for subscriptions. The rankings are a reflection of about 10-12 peoples opinions which range from several WHL scouts, head scouts, my staff, myself. We do our best to come up with accurate rankings. However, everyone has a different list and it is always up for debate. There will be some players not even selected from the 96 age group that will be 30 goal scorers in the WHL one day. That is how it go's when you are trying to project 13-14 yr old kids. Some continue to improve, while others fall. It is the nature of the best.
best regards

People do not worry about this list, it a minority poll. Infact, there are alot of hockey professionals who find the list to be laugable! Just worry about your own kid getter better, put your energy towards skill development.
The draft is snap shot of 14 year olds, who won't play in the WHl for quite sometime or never. Most scouts tend to get it wrong, the proof is at the WHL website, check it out for yourself.
this should show how much of a crap shoot it is;
Top ten whl scorers:
Linden Vey 2nd round 42 overall
Tyler Johnson 11th round
Ryan Nugent Hopkins 1strd 1 overall
Brendan Ranford 1st rd 15th overall
Mark Stone 5th rd 92 overall
Adam Huglesman 2nd rd 28th overall
Brendan Gallager 9th rd 195 overall
Jodan Weal 3rd 79th overall
Brendan Shinnimin not drafted
Johnathon Parker 1st pick USA draft
In 2006 there was a special USA draft
This is just an example in their Draft year some of these players were deemed cant miss prospects. Some were considered too small
some to slow. So it shows you that this year some players will get drafted to high and some to low it is an impossible science and as said before just a snap shot in time.More and more teams are drafting skill I think over time that has proved to be the best theory.
Players and Parents have to take being drafted as a comlement and a opputunity and they should be proud they have been selected.
Player not drafted just have to contiue on and at the end of the day they could be the one who ends up playing when others drafted players are not.
good comments on the last 2 posts!
5;18 very informative thanks for the good legwork

Sabres will win, unless the ambhl changes the rules and counts shots instead of goals...and it is the royals parents "counting" shots.
Do you really think racist remarks are necesary in making your point?
Wow, no kidding... 8:24 stop posting unless you have something intelligent to say!
Funny I just looked outside and I saw a Canadian Flag,,,,,,, Freedom of Speech mean anything to you. Your right though, you don't have to like it :)
Does anyone know what "racist" actually means? I ask just because it appears that 2 people don't.
You guys need to control yourselves. The blog owner has already warned that he will stop the comments if we don't use common sense. I believe racism is way offside.
I think 8:45 had it right... it was just not an intelligent thing to say.
5:18 that is a great post and it really show how the draft is important it is not everthing thanks more of that and less of the above 4 posts
5:18 Feb. 17 is a great post and timely too.
