Last week, we discussed who we thought were the top 1-2 offensive punches up front in western Canada. This week, we will look at who may have the top 1-2 possible defensive pairings. In the case of a few teams, it goes much deeper than just 2 good defenseman, as evidence by the BWC Bruins and the Calgary Bisons who go at least four deep.
1. BWC - Fabbro/Barberis
- Both defenseman have a chance to go very high or at the very least in the first round of the 2013 WHL bantam draft. At this point, there isn't another team that can claim that. Add in possible top 3 round picks such as Ginnetti and this makes BWC at or near the top for defense.
2. Calgary Bisons - Mckinstry/Tanaka
- The Bisons received a couple nice additions in the off-season with Tanaka coming over from Airdrie and Drohan from the Northstar Sabres. However, Mckinstry and Tanaka as a 1-2 pairing would be the 2nd best right now in western Canada.
3. Notre Dame Hounds - Reid/Faith
- A pair of outstanding defenseman who have moved to Notre Dame from Balgonie. They were part of a very good team in 11-12 which included high WHL draft pick defenseman Riddle/Murray last year. Good skaters with huge upside here.
4. St. Albert Sabres - Mahura/Deighton
- The Sabres should be another very good defensive team in western Canada led by the returning Mahura and a very good addition from AA in Connor Deighton who is one of our dark horse players this season.
5. Lloydminster Heat - Clague/Petrie
- Kale Clague is perhaps the top in Western Canada at this point so an argument could be made that you could add any defenseman with him and rank them here. However, we feel people will be surprised in Tristan Petrie this year as his skating has improved, which was the one thing holding him back.
6. OHA - Rizzolo/Khaira
- Khaira was the only 98 born on a stacked Cloverdale team last year while Rizzolo comes over from Mission. Should form a very good 1-2 punch.
7. POE - Turanski/Jarrett
- POE has once again recruiting several good defenseman. Maybe not to the level of last years group but still a deep group led by Turanski who is a big, stay at home type and Jarrett who has good size and can do a bit of everything.
8. Winnipeg Hawks - Thurlbeck/Thorsteinson
- The two leaders of a pretty good Hawks defense. They combine size, skill and leadership and have a chance to move up the rankings this year we feel. The news today of the loss of Liam Schioler to Shattucks is a huge blow to a team who has designs on making westerns.
9. Winnipeg Warriors - Friesen/Thornton
- Friesen is a big, strong stay at home type while Thornton is a pure gamer - but a bit small. Nonetheless, a very good 1-2 punch for the Warriors this year.
10. SSAC Southgate - Quenneville/???
- Fill in the blank here. If anyone can even play half decent, this could be a top five position for SSAC. However, it is still a bit un-clear as to who will step up to play with and help the reigning AMBHL North defenseman of the year!
Once again, feel free to debate this list as certainly it is up for debate until we get well in to the season.

Tyr Thompson to play with Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds
Tyr Thompson, the son of former NHL tough guy and current Oklahoma City Barons assistant coach will be leaving Oklahoma City to live with his uncle Jeremy Thompson in Medicine Hat and play with the Hockey Hounds of the AMBHL. Thompson, who is a 1998 born won a USA Peewee National Championship with his Oklahoma City team, scoring the OT winner back in 2011. Last year he put up more than a point per game in USA Nationals at the U14 level. Thompson has almost always been at or near the top in the goal scoring department in each league or in various tournaments. It should also not come as a surprise that Thompson has a bit of an edge to his game as well.

August 24, 2012 newsletter is now ready!
Rankings
The August 24, 2012 newsletter is now ready. In this edition of the newsletter, we update the Top 200 for 98's, Top 120 for 99's and make some adjustments. As well, stats have been updated for all players in the 98 and 99 age group with the exception of some PCAHA teams. There have also been over 25 transfers of players switching teams, that is updated too. The Top 40 western American players are updated.
Interviews
In the interview section this time around I chat with perhaps the lone player who is likely to player Midget AAA hockey this season. He credits his NHL draft pick brother and father with much of his success.
Interviewed is an Alberta prospect who is a in your face, gamer type of player. Although not big in size, he says he likes to lead by example and be tough to play against.
We chat with a 99 born player who scored over 100 goals and 200 points in peewee hockey last season. He will be taking his game to one of the academies next year.
Lastly, we chat with a BC defenseman who is a puck moving, point producer but also prides himself at being solid in his own end with a quick stick. He is also heading to an academy for 2012-2013.
Feature - AMBHL South Preview
In this editions feature segment, we preview all the teams in the AMBHL North Division and tell where we think they'll finish, who will be the top rookie on each team and top players coming up from AA or peewee.

Taylor Ross to Notre Dame
** Gage Ramsey is moving from Saskatoon to join the Notre Dame Hounds for 2012-2013. Ramsay was one of the top 3 -98 born forwards from Saskatoon. Looks as though all 3 will be moving if the Pilon to West Central rumours are correct.
Should be noted as well that Taren Brown is moving from Estevan to Notre Dame for 12-13. Brown had nearly a ppg as a rookie in bantam last year with 6-13-19 in 24 games. Brown is nearly 6'2 180lbs currently and should add good depth to the forward group.
It has been confirmed this morning that Taylor Ross will be moving to Notre Dame from Balgonie for the 2012-2013 bantam season. Ross, who put up 11-7-18 in just 11 games last season with the provincial champion Prairie Storm, would've likely been second in team scoring if not injured last season. Ross will join team-mates Nolan Reid and Jeff Faith in Notre Dame next year.
There has been lots of movement in recent weeks of players moving to top teams. Just last week it was announced that Kaden Elder from Saskatoon would be heading to Notre Dame as well. Elder was arguably the top Saskatoon forward last year despite being a full year younger than other top players such as Sloboshan, Hebig and Lambert.
Here are is a brief breakdown of a few top players switching teams:
Taren Brown from Estevan to Notre Dame
Kaden Elder from Saskatoon to Notre Dame
Gage Ramsay from Saskatoon to Notre Dame
Jaeger White from Medicine Hat to BWC
Carter Hart from Fort Saskatchewan to Sherwood Park
Kaedan Brown from Edmonton KC to Sherwood Park
Darren Rizzolo from Mission to Abbotsford

Nayte Zip from Humboldt to Northeast Wolfpack
Brody Wilms from Coquitlam to OHA
Colby Entz from Yorkton to Notre Dame
Cale Fleury from Estevan to Notre Dame
Ralph Jarrett from Grand Prairie to POE

Notre Dame Hounds Land Another Top Player
Dube (white) should add more offence to Notre Dame |
With word earlier that a few of the Balgonie Prairie Storm players were headed to Notre Dame as Nolan Reid, Jeff Faith and Taylor Ross look headed their. Taylor Ross isn't confirmed as of yet though. Tonight we have learned that Airdrie scoring forward Dillon Dube will in fact be headed to the Hounds for 12-13. Dillon had a successful rookie bantam season with 7-11-18 in just 21 games in an injury shortened season. Dube, if you remember was second to Jaeger White in peewee scoring 2 years ago with 69 goals and 99 points which was second to White's 124 goals that season.
We expect to be another major announcement tomorrow, with a top Manitoban headed to Notre Dame. Stay tuned.

BWC Receive Another Offensive Boost
What many knew a while ago but we thought we'd wait until it became official is that the BWC Bruins have welcomed back 2 former players. Owen Seidel, who spent time with BWC before moving Seafair to play has joined the team once again, as has Robert Johnson from Kamloops. Seidel, with Seafair had 3-11-14 in 43 games while Johnson with Kamloops had 9-4-13 in 53 games.
Seidel and Johnson will add some depth to the forward lines on the 2nd and 3rd lines likely. BWC already has Jake Kryski, who is said to have grown quite a bit since last year as well as Jaeger White, Ken Kylyshbek, Kyle Uy and Max Corazza.

Sherwood Park gets big boost in goal for 12-13
The Sherwood Park Flyers of the AMBHL who looked to be a force again next season, just got that much better with news that Carter Hart and family have moved from Fort Saskatchewan to Sherwood Park. Hart, who split duties with Colton Kucher last season with a struggling Fort Saskatchewan in which he put up a 4.20 GAA and a .887 Save percentage, will add to a good Sherwood Park squad.
The Flyers will also gain the services of the Kaeden Brown from the Edmonton KofC program. Brown had 6-6-12 and 75 pims in 32 games.
The Flyers who already had top 10 rated prospect Sam Steel as well as Skyler Mckenzie and Brandon Biro up front with Lakusta and Paradis on the back-end look primed for another season near the top of the AMBHL North standings.

Interviews
In the interview section this time around, I had a chance to speak with a player who has size and can score and would like to model his game after Rick Nash. He also had many high end draft picks from last year to learn from.
I speak with a 99 born hockey player who could be the next star in the making from Alberta.
We interview a defenseman from Calgary who is a big shutdown type defenseman who would like to model his game after Zdeno Chara.
Interviewed also is a player who moved from Calgary to Vancouver Island and goes a bit unnoticed but has big time speed and skill.
Lastly, I speak with a hulking defenseman who should draw lots of attention this year due to his combination of skating and size.

WHL Prospects Camp - Scout needed
Due to a personal issue, the scout I had assigned to scout the WHL Prospects Camp at the Father David Bauer Arena from August 10-12, can't make it. If you are able to scout the tournament, I will provide you with the schedule and what I would be looking for.
Some of the times I would need you to watch are:
Friday Evening - 4:45 - 8:15 - 3 scrimmages
Saturday Evening - 5:00 - 10:00 - 3 scrimmages
*There are also several scrimmages during the day on Saturday and Sunday if that works better but they are staggered and not consecutive.

The camp will be the first in the bantam age category the WHL has hosted in Canada and will focus on player development and education. The camp will include scrimmages, off-ice player development seminars and on-ice and off-ice combine testing.
Here listed is a breakdown of the top 102 Alberta players who were selected to play. Not all players invited could make it due to various commitments.
