NAAAACC Underway Tomorrow/July Top 5 lists

The North American AAA Champions Cup is set to get underway tomorrow in Las Vegas.  The 1998 age group will consist of Sask-Can, Vancouver Selects Blue, Edmonton Mercury's, Alberta Ice and Spartan PFO.  Action will begin tomorrow morning at 8:15 with SaskCan vs. Alberta Ice.  The final is slated for Friday at 2:30.  One would have to think the Edmonton Mercury's are the overwhelming favourites to capture the title.  The Vancouver Selects Blue would be the other contender.  However, anything can happen and usually does.

The 1999 age group will feature the Southern Alberta Sting, Alberta Chain, Team Doritos and the Minnesota Machine.  Action begins Monday morning at 9:45 and wraps up with the final on Friday at 4:15pm.

White & steel are better than benson

Van Selects beat Mercury's 7-6 this morning in the 98' draw. Mercury's put in a poor effort other than Steel, Rotundo and Vulcan. The rest need to step up. Only 6 skaters of the Mercury's are here from the team that went to Winnipeg. So not the allstar team that was assembled for the Winnipeg tourney. Looks like these boys are on a bit of a holiday. Still great talent but need to pick it up. I would think these two will meet in the final and will be a much different outcome.

The Edmonton is NOT the same team as it was in Winnipeg. By a longshot.

Benson is quite a bit better then Steele or White. Its a matter of opinion. Mine differs from yours. My son is a 97 and played against all three last year. I take Benson all day!!! They are all very good though. Just the way I see it....

This is a little off topic. But I was heard the Brick Tournament is going on and thought how many of the 98's that are on this list are that played. While I was surprised on how strong the Alberta Brick team actually was back then. I could only find the BC team and Alberta team. otherwise I would have added Winnipeg and Sask.

Whats also curious is how many played in the finals at Winnipeg. This is more of info then anything else. if I missed am player sorry.Team Alberta won it that year looking at the talent that's not a surprise.

I understand there are a lot of great players in the AMBHL this year but i really think that Rotundo and Volcan do not get the hype that Steel and Benson get. I think Volcan will go a lot higher than people think as he is as complete of player that there is. Don't get me wrong love Steel and Benson but I think Volcan will surprise.

Macdonald, what number was he for the steelers?

Anonymous said...

Andrusiak played as well who is at POE now

The Mercury's finished the tournament and season off strong in Vegas. The top 4 forwards in Vegas (Steel,Vulcan,Rotundo,Jevne) got stronger as the tournament went on, as well as the only 2 original Mercury Dmen to make the trip(Freadrick and Chalifoux) moved the puck well and stopped any threats from the opposition. The Mercury's only brought 6 skaters from the Winnipeg team but that is all they needed with a good supporting crew to win the Vegas Tournament quit easily.

Anonymous said...

Was their really any doubt.

It would have been a better tournament if DHI,Vipers and the Hitmen were there. Oh well, the pool was nice.

Anonymous said...

Your arrogance is embarrassing folks. Remember, the kids play - not us. Maybe if the Selects hadn't had the flu go through their team last few days of Vegas they might have been more competitive. They did win the opening game against Mercurys. Steel was the difference in final game. Quite a player. There's 'no doubt' about that.

Anonymous said...

Bwc could have up to 8 first rounders thIs year. I don't see any other team that even comes close to that. Looking forward to watching them in st.albert this year

Anonymous said...

White Top 3. Fabbro top 5. Barberis top 10. Kryski. First round. Uy 1st round. Shugrue 1st round. Ginetti/Johnson/kylshbeck second round I'd say.

Anonymous said...

8:48, yes no doubt that Steel is a great player but ..... Really? A 6-1 drubbing, out shot 3 to 1 and one guy was the difference? The Van Selects were out played in that final in Vegas in every aspect. Sounds like every team there battled the flu. No team worse than the Mercury's themselves. So please don't use that as an excuse. The Vancouver selects loaded up for the Vegas tourney and the Mercury's brought a part team and the Selects still come up much short. In Winnipeg the Van Selects should have been in the lower division.

A few comments: 8:48

in H4 and Atom a 6-1 finals was ok, But at this age, parents, coaches and managers know if they are a AAA team or not. Parents spend alot of money to attend tournaments then feel let down when the competition is not their. Not fault to the kids, but to the managers and the tournament directors. You will have to agree that if your team flew to Chicago and played against House teams that calmed to be AAA and won by double digits you would be frustrated as well.

10:31
Having watched the finals at Winnipeg, They do have some very good players I would say at least 5 or 6. Def and Goalie are the backbone of that team. We will see how White does with this new team. The Mercury's would be around 7 or 9ish.
I do think it will be a Alberta and BC year. Winnipeg and Saskatchewan
have a few great players , but seem to be spread out all over. Not sure how BWC gets away with bringing in players? Can others do this in BC as well?

Anonymous said...

Excuses are for losers. The arrogance of BWC/98Vipers is commical. The only thing BWC does is attract good players whose parents believe need better playere around them so they can win. The kids have been developed elsewhere and mom/dad believe this is their chance to be a winner so they pay the $$$ and then feel entitled to winning. The 98 Vipers have made it to the finals in Winnipeg (the highest caliber tourney in Western North America) for the last few years so give them credit for getting there. But, they have yet to win it so it appears as though this group is missing something, the ability to win the biggest of games. Even after flying kids in from all over North America for spring tournaments, they are still unable to win the big one. Let the kids play and wish them lots of luck in St. Albert, assuming they can win a crucial game to get them there.

Poe will have 3 forwards go in 1st round

I watched the finals the last 2 years in Winnipeg. All I can do is applaude the Steelers, Hitman, Mercury, Vipers, Minnesota and Selects for putting together these great teams. I know it cost a lot of money but thanks for doing it. It was great hockey to watch. Spring is your only chance where you can bring all these talented kids (from everywhere) together to compete at this high level possible. Win or lose, I can guarantee that this kids enjoyed the competition. Quite a few of these kids will play at the next level for sure. It sounds like your son got left off the list of these teams and your a lot bitter. You should assess where your sons at and if he's got potential, try to get him into one of these top programs ( yes they are more expensive but you get what you pay for). POE,NSWC,BWC, OHA, SSAC, Bisons just off the top of my head, depending on where you live. Don't be jealous of these programs. A good program with good coach might get rid of your fustration. Good luck with you son

6:14 could not have said it better.

They players do look forward to playing these teams and for the most part they are all friends, and know of each other. DHI also was a strong team. Most of these kids have played against each other since H4 if you can believe it.

Well put 10:31 am!!!

I agree with some of what you say. Spring is wide open and players can play where every they want. The best players often look for the best coaching and usually however not limited to close proximity to home...Vancouver kids play out of Vancouver....Edmonton kids play out or Edmonton...ect. The key is that there are no rules for recruitment, therefore it is fair game for everyone...this works and makes for fantastic hockey. However winter hockey is different as most teams are constrained in recruitment by boundaries and some BWC,POE,NSWC and OHA are not. POE and OHA are exempt from provincial playoffs however BWC and NSWC are not. If you look in BC the same 2 teams(other then Cloverdale last year) win every year. Its not coaching or anything else but recruitment that is the difference. The rules should be the same for everyone playing in the same league (ie Bantam AAA) and then you will see a true championship. BC hockey needs to give their head a shake. If you are from Burnaby then you should play for Burnaby and thats it...if you are from the North shore then play for the North shore...then you will see every team having a realistic shot at winning...the current system is a joke.

Anonymous said...

All of burnabys players are registered with the burnaby winter club. Don't be jealous your son isn't good enough to play for them .

Anonymous said...

Not jealous. Facts are facts. Registered means nothing! If all the player at BWC had to be from Burnaby they would have good teams some years and some years not so good just like everyone else. Have at it in spring but if the rules should be the same for everyone. BWC recruits kid even from Alberta. They bend the rules and then register them like they have played there all their lives. Its a joke! Basically you have a spring team playing club teams. The best 98s are in Edmonton (hands down) however you are probably right that the rules in Alberta will ensure that all of these kids play in their designated areas and the talent will be watered down. BWC may win again however when all was even in the spring the Edmonton Mercuy's were by far the best spring team.

4:00 . Did you know the 1996 Abbotsford Bantam team brought in players ? One of the many players lived in Squamish and didn't even live in Abby. Now back playing Major Midget for the Squamish zone. Semiahmoo last year for the 1997, Seafair in Atom, Richmond in Atom and Pee Wee, Langley 4 new players this year in Bantam, Semiahmoo 1 goalie this year. Abby 1 for 1998. The list goes on and on. It sure look like a lot player movement in the Associations on their AAA teams. I guess thats ok????

Anonymous said...

Ok it is what it is , is it not about getting better and moving on to the next leave, yes winning is fun , but getting better is important also , hard work , earn it, compete , have heart

Is there any place where I can find a ranking list for 98 and 99 born players to compare the WEHP one to? I was thinking of donating to the WEHP newsletter but want to buy another publication as well to compare it to.

Anonymous said...

Can someone post the Top 100 WEHP 98 born list on here?

Anonymous said...

Another list is the scouting news.

Anonymous said...

Is it true that the scoutingnews steals the WEHP rankings and just runs little snipit stories after? That is what I heard from scouts and other people, let me know before I purchase.

They copy rankings as far as I know and call it the news.

Anonymous said...

The Scouting News is not remotely related to any legitimate scouting or ranking organization; 2) The Scouting News purposely and systematically attempts to blacklist players whose parents have had disagreements with The Scouting News in the past.

If your thinking White is a better replacement then BWC other players: Trevor Ayre, Owen Seidel, Kaellen Anderson, and Joel Murga ....... Wow, those are big big big shoes to fill.

White should already be signing a NHL contract

NSWC didn't loose any players from their PeeWee years and BWC struggled to beat them ....... I think the tides have changed over the years.
