The Calgary Champions Cup is underway and we are gradually starting to shift the focus from the 96 and 97 born players to the 97 and 98 groups.  Most of the best summer hockey teams and many of the top players in these age groups are taking part in both age groups.  Once again in the 97 age group, it looks like the Saskatoon Jr. Blades, Calgary Jr. Flames and the Vancouver Selects Blue looks to be loaded with prospects in the 97 age group.

The Vancouver Selects Blue were  the only undefeated team in the round-robin portion going 4-0-0 while outscoring the opposition 31-8.  The Vancouver squad are led by Adam Musil (brother of Vancouver Giants defenseman David), Jordan Kawaguchi, Tyler Soy, Darien Craighead (son of former NHLer John), Matt Bradley and Ty Ronning (son of cliff).  On defense, big Tanner Browne who looks to be a sure fire top 10 pick next year, Noah Jullsen and American Daniel Woolfenden.  Goalies Evan Sarthou from the US and Quinton Paille have been with this program for a few years now.

The Saskatoon Jr. Blades are once again a powerhouse and the team has almost all of the top end players in the province.  The Jr. Blades went 3-0-1 outscoring the opposition 27-8.  Up front, Rylee Zimmer who looks like another sure fire top 10 pick and will be playing with Notre Dame is one of the offensive leaders.  Terrell Draude, Matt Campese, Regan Nagy and small shifty Jimmy Lambert add ample offence.  The back-end is deep just like Vancouver and really doesn't have a weakness.  Tate Olson from Saskatoon is very good and Lochlan Morrison along with Mike Eskra are elite.

The Calgary Jr. Flames are once again strong but perhaps not as strong as last years squad that was just loaded from top to bottom.  The Flames in the tournament are 3-1-0 and have outscored the opposition 22-10.  They lost to the BC Jr Heat 5-4 and narrowly defeated the POE Red Stars 4-3.  Mason McCarty, Nick Merkley and Ryan Barrow will give the team some dangerous scoring while on defense Savi Scalise, Marshall Burr and Oliver Lester are very capable.  Riley Morris and Jake Morrissey handle the goaltending duties.

The NAA Rangers from the Edmonton are are also 3-1-0 and round out the last of the so-called dangerous teams.  Up front Dylan Stewart and Andrew Marshall look to be dangerous with good speed and skill.  On Defense, Clayton Eisler and Dylan Overdyk are smooth skating defenseman will skill.  Tyler Kwiatkowski will handle many of the big games in goal for the Rangers this summer.

Also, stay tuned to the final Mock Draft that I will post on the site Tuesday.  I'm just waiting for some final notes to come my way and for the BC Cup to be completed.  I'm not too sure if Virtanen and Gropp have hurt their ranking or not by having a bit of an off weekend and not tearing it up like many of us thought they may.  One weekend certainly doesn't make a season but a bit more domination was expected.

Reports are that with 200 players in a jamboree style tourney it was pure pond hockey. No real plays. Just look at some performances. Some kids thrive on this tier 2 stuff. Others fall asleep. This is crap. We will have to wait for the Provincial camp in July when the top 60? are put together. Then we will see something close to the Provincials and Westerns and other elite tourneys like St. Albert and Med Hat.Scouts won't be influenced by this much. Virtanen will be taken high....million dollar legs..intangibles aside.

Virtanen has lit it up, the BC Hockey stats are missing one of the Predators scoresheets. Send an email to them to update their stats.

Are you going to post the full top 200 list on the website for everyone to see on tuesday?

Western Elite said...

No, the full list will not be published on the site. It is available in the last newsletter which was 32 pages long. It wouldn't be fair to the subsribers who paid the 10 bucks for it.

I may however put up a revised mock draft. We'll see if I can find the time for it.

It is hard to believe that such comments cause such "adversity" between so called hockey poeple, these kids are 14 and 15 years old top quality kids with alot to prove yet, they are playing against kids there own age, wait until they next level when they play against kids 3 years there senior and then these type of comments will be laughed at!!! To argue about pts per game at the bantam level??? why??? lets see how you face the next step, not even a point per game for 15 year olds is a great feat, and is only done by a certain few!!! Relax and enjoy the best and worst is yet to come. My son was drafted ahead of jordan eberle in the bantam draft , and now is no longer playing hockey, but enjoying the freinds he made along the way!!! with this in mind you should really get ready as parents for the next few steps !! they are large ones , one day at a time !!

If you are going to post stats on the front page for the U16 it would be appreciated if they were correct. Thank-you!

Just so you know there is no affiliation with any of the jr flames teams there are parent run.
The 97s have nothing to do with the 96 team.Same name is all
no support from the name sake team.

Well done!!!! There many kids who never adjust to the next level!!! Big STEP!!! God luck to all !! You have some kids in your top 200 who have made the step to the next level and done very well with out alot of hipe ??? Good luck to them the guess work is done!!! have Fun 1997's

the 97 flames is a program of Pat Elynuik..you are invited to attend or not...parents do not pick players or tournaments or practice shedule or anything like that...while they have a parent manager ALL decisions are made by Pat and his staff...this is they way it should be as parents tend to do and say things for their own selfish benefits and cause problems...Elynuik runs an excellent program, develops kids and keeps the selfish needs of a few parents out of the picture and that is the way to run these programs---no parent input at all!

it will all work out im sure but....depending on which officials you had, there were next to no assists given by some and a lot of even second assists given by others. The emphasis on stats has to be taken with a grain of salt. I was working in the box and this was very evident.

this pond hockey jamboree tourney isn't even at the level of spring hockey tourneys let alone aaa bantam rep.how it could have any bearing on a kid moving up or down scout rankings is beyond me.is it best on best ?no .....diluted with lower tier players and goalies.no semblance of flow or attack whatsoever.money grab for bc hockey.lots of individual play....waste of time and money participating.

12:11 is bang on the mark! What a waste of money, time etc. This was basically a huge money maker(grab)for BC Hockey. The '96 group was so "watered down" that any chance to have any type of game flow or plays develop was nullified by the presence of basically "house" players there just to fill in spots. I watched a significant amount of games and was shocked at the level of ability (or lack thereof)of some participants-again "house players" at best. I listened to 3 coaches of the U16 teams chatting and they said this isnt "high performance" its "mediocre performance" hockey-that was being kind!
The cream will always rise to the top, but lopsided teams and poor quality of participants doesnt prove a thing.

I agree. The gap between the elite players and the lower end players was quite noticeable, but I don't think the blame lies with the players. BC Hockey increased the camp to 200 kids this year, to put an extra 40 kids on the ice and an extra $24,000 in their coffers. If this was truly for the best kids in the province it would be invitation only, exactly how the U17 works next year. I know the WHL scouts were complaining about going to two different rinks, next year will go back to 8 teams and 160 kids.

The whole best ever program has gotten so out of wack, it has become a cash crab, the timimg of the tryouts, the potentisl for injuries, it should be scrapped at the under 16 level or they should do it the old fashined way and have it by invite.

total cash grab at best, build there coffer at the expense of parents

When a player scores a goal, the ref skates over to the scorekeeper and passes on the scoring info. The scorekeeper writes this down and it is then announced to the crowd. So why is it that this information is then not accurately posted on your stats page?
If you are going to post the stats for all to see then it would only be fair to the boys who scored and assisted to be acknowledged for their accomplishments.

How do you figure that the U16 is a "money grab"? You pay $616 for your son to attend and play in a jamboree style hockey tournament where there is an arena full of scouts & agents. They stay in a hotel for 3 nights. They bus to and from VV arena. They eat 3 meals a day, are given T-shirts, tape, matts, pictures, back pouches and such. They have been well cared for and have had an excellent time. If your son is one of the fortunate boys, he will then play on further. If not, you have a chance to see what the competition is and find out what areas your son needs to work on for next seasons pick. How is that a waste?

$120,0000........says it all doesn't it.best ever ......i don't think so.somebody needs to review and overhaul the whole process,,,,from evaluators all the way to the top.it's an embarrassment really that they have been able to do this at the expense of the young men.does anybody at bc hockey have the kahonas to speak up and give their side of the story?

Anonymous said...

so all of a sudden the lesser players all of sudden after the season ended improved their game?were scouts not present during the winter season?all of a sudden players got better overnight?do you really think scouts can assess talent at this lower level vs the season's work?

Anonymous said...

As a parent my son went to the tournament because he made the team, however i can say it was some of the worst hockey i have ever watched, the players weren't good, the good players were spread amongst the tier 2 player, the goaltending was terrible except for one goalie. No idea his name he had red pads though, the scores were liek a 3 on 3 teram and there was no orangization at all. and from what ive heard if my kid makes the bc team we will barely practice, WHAT a JOKE. Warning to 1997 kids that play tier 1, don't go, there will be tons of scouts at your games if your in tier 1, expecially against good teams like bwc and nswc so just wait till those games, dont waste 1200 to play some junk hockey!
