Road to Westerns

The first team has been decided for the Western Canada Bantam Championships in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Hawks defeated the Winnipeg Sharks last night 6-0 to take the series 4-0. Winnipeg will now advance to the Provincial Final Four which takes place in Brandon beginning next weekend. The other teams taking part will be the host Brandon Wheat Kings, Southwest Jets, Southeast Blizzard. The overwhelming favorites to win the final four will be the Winnipeg Hawks. A Hawks win, means they would go in as Team Manitoba and the Winnipeg Sharks would be hosts. If they happen to get upset, which is highly unlikely, would mean they would go in as hosts.

In Prince Albert, the Prince Albert Venice House Pirates defeated the Saskatoon Maniacs in game 1 of a two game total goal series 7-2. The Maniacs will now have to outscore the Pirates by atleast 5 goals back in Saskatoon on Saturday to force OT. The Pirates got off to a big of a sluggish start being outshot 12-4 in the first period but Pirates goalie Logan Morhart kept it close. Reed Gunvills opened the scoring and Dawson Leedahl replied for Saskatoon for a 1-1 tie after period one. The Pirates went up 3-1 in the 2nd period with a couple quick goals by Matthew Campese and Lance Yaremchuk but Eric Climenhaga scored shortly after to cut the gap to 3-2 after 40 minutes. In the 3rd, defenseman Bryton Sayers set up 3 goals and scored the final goal and all told had a 5 point night for the Pirates.

The AMBHL final schedule is out and it will begin this Saturday and Sunday in Calgary for a pair of contests. The Calgary Bisons and Edmonton SSAC were in the WEHP Top 10 all season long and had the top two records in the AMBHL. They were the only two teams to crack 50 points with the Bisons finishing just 1 point ahead at 27-4-2 while SSAC was 26-4-3. The Bisons scored the most goals in the league by far and 44 more than SSAC but SSAC allowed the 2nd least in the league and 26 fewer than Calgary. The series features the leagues leading scorer in Brayden Point and the North/South winners for goalies of the year in Adin Hill and Jordan Papirny. The rookie of the year came from SSAC in Giorgio Estephan who had over 60 points. The Bisons feature South defenseman of the year in Brycen Martin. John Quennville of SSAC was named North top forward.

What BC Parents really want to go to Winnipeg - $20,000.00 + tab for five games?? Sorry Winnipeg....

wow... weren't the westerns in burnaby last year? didn't every province show up for them? Either that is an elitist comment, or your kid's team didn't make it and you are justifyig it. Either way, your comment is ignorant.

Every town looks the same inside a rink.
What's different is the hockey.
If you don't think the money's worth the experience for your kids.
Then house hockey is for you.
I've been to Winnipeg three times because that's where the good tournaments are.
That the Subway spring tournament I refer to.
The Western's will be great as well.
I'm from B.C. Go big or stay home I'm all in are you?

how is it 20000 $ ? probably 2500 $ for travel and 500$ for food. 800$ for hotel and another 500 $ anonymous.

wow, sounds like either bitterness from a parent on a team that didn't qualify. Or...another example of BC thinking like out east...or do you mean the meaningful world doesn't end at the mountains? So I suppose that when it was hosted in BC last year, that the Manitoba teams should have been honored to spend that same amount of money to travel to the West Coast? hmmm... Here's food for thought from the kids perspective(imagine that!)-parents footing the bill aside (that's par for the course if you choose to have your kid in competitive hockey. How about a great experience for some kids that for many who don't go on to higher levels, may be the pinnacle of their hockey?

very true

We have been to Winnipeg three times for the Subway Classic to play great hockey. We have been to Medicine Hat, St.Albert, Edmonton, Calgary, Kamloops etc... . Not for site seeing I'll assure you. These trips were to play the best hockey.

And people come from all those places to play hockey in B.C. for the same reason. Cities look all the same from inside a rink and a hotel, but the hockey is different.

Sorry 2:44 maybe your in the wrong game go to Vegas where the other hockey is played for tourists (nothing wrong with that by the way).

We are "all in" to experience the highest level of competition in the 2011 bantam season in western Canada.

Besides Winnipeg is a nice change for us west coasters, and the people are great. 2:44 can save his money and drop it off in Vegas.

Well the SSAC vs Bisons series is all over. SSAC beat them 6 - 3 in the first game. Call the series off and just award it to SSAC. Good night Bisons.

Not only 20,000 for 5 games but the two host manitoba teams will be weak the Sask team weak and the only competive game will be between Alberta and Bc I dont know why those teams dont meet in Golden and settle it there. Just my opinion

Royals should be in the final against SSAC.

Anonymous said...

strong predictions, someone will be eating crow after the tournament. maybe that will save them some money from the trip to winnipeg.

Anonymous said...

Why should the Royals be in the finals vs SSAC,, they lost in the 2nd round?

Anonymous said...

Royals lost to Bisons so how should it be Royals 248 your team got smoked by the Bisons .Also Bisons evened series and looked like the better Team in doing it SSac had 14 power plays and coulnt win take penaltys vs Bisons you pay BIsons In 5

Anonymous said...

Royals lots of talent, something missing though. They would not have beaten RD White had they got that far.

Anonymous said...

Bisons in 5 over SSAC.

Anonymous said...

Shoulda, coulda, woulda .... need a reality check?

Anonymous said...

8:51, what so you think of game 2 vs Bisons? I will admit, for an Edmonton area team SSAC is very good, but the cockiness is premature.

Anonymous said...

9:39 are you sure your not from the centre of the universe (Toronto) because you sure sound like you have the same mentality as them.

You are correct that some of the teams are stronger in the West but look at the numbers also???The bantams are also about identifying top players in their bantam age group as a whole.

I guess if everyone had your Western mentality that nothing is out there past the East border of Alberta players from Manitoba such as Jonathan Toews, Dustin Boyd, Nigel Dawes, Trevor Kidd, Duncan Keith, Cam Barker etc etc..should have never had a chance to play or be seen right??? Do us Prairie folk a big favour and stay out of Saskatchewan & Manitoba please if you have that kind of attitude and perspective about the rest of Canada.

SSAC won the series? I am confused. The website says it is one game a piece... or is there something I am missing?

Anonymous said...

bc provs are obviously rigged. abby plays kamloops in their first game and blazers 2 and same with cloverdale and abby.

Anonymous said...

ssac vs. bisons is tied at one game apiece.

Anonymous said...

BC not into Manitoba but AB is!--we want to go wherever good hockey tourneys are offered...That ignorant comment doesn't speak for all B C ans I am sure---To the author: last year BC had 2 teams in the Western Canadian Championships and Manitoba beat AB in many OT's in the final--- where were you or was that not even worth your time? SSAC and Bisons 2 very good teams and hopefully it goes 5!

Anonymous said...

But to your point.I was at Westerns last year and Bwc as well as North shore were not able to get it done of all the Prov it seams like BC has the highest opionion of it self

Anonymous said...

BWC put on a tremendous Westerns last yeat, it was first class, the hockey was great, the top 4 teams were so close.

The Gold Medal and Bronze Medal Games all went to Double OT.

Congrats to SSAC Taking the Bisons in 5
