Benson scoring break down:
46 points in 12 league games (3.83 pts/game) against the other top 5 teams in the north of the AMBHL. (3 in the top 15 teams of western Canada.) Note: This is the same pace that Rattie scored at when he set the record against all teams.
91 points in the other 17 league games (5.35 pts/game) against bottom 6 teams.
137 points in 29 total league games (4.72 pts/game)
Seems to be very good stats for the best league in Western Canada.
And to note he got 19 pts in 6 games at the John Reid Memorial Tournament (3.16 pts/game)this year which featured 12 of the top 15 teams in western canada.
Point production obviously goes down when playing the top teams but amazing stats none the less.
This isn't the 1st year that stats against all teams have been included in the totals. Even happened when Ty Rattie played and when all scoring records in all of hockey are set.

There will be few surprises come draft day , must diff. Then what you see now , always is

Anonymous said...

Of this current top 10 you provide, there will only be 2 players actually be drafted in the top 10. You'll see...List is way off.

Anonymous said...

So Jan 29-13 at 1127 who is missing??????

Anonymous said...

might have 1/2 of the picks right - if your lucky

Anonymous said...

Garbage! Where are the real good dmen and the two-way players here? I'd hate to see the rest of the list, ouch.

Anonymous said...

Jan 29 @ 11,30. McDonald will be top 10 most defiantly

Anonymous said...

Where does WEHP have McDonald ranked anyway?

Anonymous said...

I have to believe that from this list the following are absolute locks for the Top 10:
Tyler Benson
Kale Clague
Nolan Patrick
Dante Fabbro
Sam Steel
Matt Barberis
David Quenneville
Tyson Jost

You could argue about what order they might go in, but is there really much doubt about these guys being the cream of the cream?

It's a nice list , but it will not look like this come draft day , never is

We will likely pop up another top 10 list near the Bantam Draft. Provincial Camps still to come which will be the final chance to see everyone again.

Do kids playing out of province attend their home province camps? (The province where their parents live)

Western Elite said...

Yes, so for example Jaeger White, Kody Mcdonald and Tyson Jost would all attend the Alberta camp.

Last year around this time, when WEHP was ranking the 97's and 98's, they introduced us to some of the top 99's. Are there any top 2000 born kids who can make an impact in bantam hockey as first years next year?

Anonymous said...

Seems like a reasonable list...These ten names have been bandied about as top picks by multiple sources.

Is this blog just populated with parents who a horse in the race, or something?

Anonymous said...

This list is out to lunch I watched all these kids at the John Reid and have watched many games in Alberta and Patrick is terrible and Barberis isn't going in the first round let alone in the top 10!

Anonymous said...

You can also come in from out of country. Ie. goaltender Ty Comrie. Sucks really! Taking out of jurisdiction kids...for home grown...

Anonymous said...

patrick two shoulder surgeries and he's 14 years old? thats a red flag to me. teams should take a look at that.

TYLER: ARE YOU SURE ABOUT WHITE?
MacDonald and Jost I can see, because they are "billeting" at an Academy.
But White is playing on a PCAHA team that is eligible to play in Provincials, and he had to register as having his primary residence in Burnaby. (Whether or not that's actually true;-)

Anonymous said...

White will be playing in Alberta next yr , so he will be at Alberta cup and not BC cup , he has two choices , med hat or UFA bisons as dad lives in that area

Anonymous said...

Mcdonald wont go top 10! when everyone is the smae size as him (in junior) he will struggle to do anything! the only reason he is good now is because of his size. Jost is way more skilled and has adapted to being small and playing against people bigger than him.

My son plays for the Medicine Hat midget AAA team and I've heard White and McDonald are playing here next year.

God knows they could use some talent lol...

Top 10 Player rankings:

I am going to actually try to give some useful information to those who need some help on the next stage of your sons hockey development. It does not matter where they are playing know or next week.

Notice I did not say career.

Since you all feel that your son will still make the NHL here are a few guidelines that will help your son.

1. Appearance - from the moment your son leaves the car to walk to the rink, He is being scouted, by he attire, his English skills, respect towards everyone not just the coaches. Do not dress like a fool. When arriving to the camp look nice( not a suit) but not backwards hat,t shirt and torn jeans. Take off the headphones and put the phone away( you must have someone more important to text then the coaches you are seeing). Have confidence in yourself go up and introduce yourself, talk to everyone, by the time you leave you want everyone to know who you are for the right reasons.

2. Homework- Before arriving at the rink for these camps, make sure your son knows the coaches names in advance. Who the director of the camps or combines. That his gear fits and is in good working order.
Don't be late, ever !

3. Speak appropriately, Yes and no, Yeah, huh, what, don't cut it. If your son is going to play and represent a team its a 24 hour job not just on the ice. They sell jerseys at the rinks for a reason. If your son acts like jerk ,no parent will buy one, however if your son is courteous to little fans it goes along way.

4. There are 12 other players who want this position that your son is trying out for, even if he does not make it, Thank yous go along way. This team may not need you ,but they may know of one that does. Its a small world. Have your contact info ahead of time. Have a youtube link avail that you can forward to a coach, scout, etc. Know your stats( the real ones) Scouts are not dumb they know more about you then you think.

5. Mom and Dad - Once your son leaves the car for the rink you are done. go sit in the stands and be quiet.(he can fill his own water bottle) If you are a pain now, what will you be like when your son is one the team. The cord is cut. Your son talks to the scouts, coaches, etc. Practice this at home. But YOU need to back off. If you are known as a crazy this will be sent around so quick he will be back in the car before you get back to your seat.

When the camp or combine is over send a email( I think a hand written letter is better) never write the same letter to ever coach, if your son is not willing to take the time and write a letter to each one, Why would a coach take the time to see him in the first place.

These little things will not get him on the team, However it could get you taken off of one very quickly.

I meet a few players from Llyod at St Albert very polite, held the door for a little kid even with there bags in there arms. People remember everything good and bad.

Good luck

This is why many skilled kids that grow late, who are tough enough to hang in there until they do grow end up very strong. It builds character to have to struggle but they do need to be tough. The kids that are small now but are timid and won't go in the corners etc will fade away fast or play until they get injured.
Judging a kids growth potential is very important when selecting a draft pick. Shaving-done, squeaky voice or pimples-just starting. Very simple.
I met a Peewee parent last summer who told me of his kids hockey skills, and how big his kid was going to be.He appeared from the concession was about 5'8" (big for Peewee and tallest on his team) but was already taller than his dad and appeared to need a shave. The reality is this kid is done. He was having great success in Peewee because of his early growth not his skill set but my guess is he will eventually be passed by.
Size is important, but skill set and growth stage is just as important.
Jost has the skill set and at 5"8" with room to grow should do well.

White will have a very hard time in Midget AAA. From St Albert, no desire at all. Not much for a team player either from what people saw. There were moments of ok he has got it, but far and few.

Mcdonald is not going to med hat , never , but they could use some skill

Some of you "parents" should be embarrassed with yourselves. Putting 14 year old kids down and ripping on them. Its a complete joke, but in this day in age you're allowed to hide behind a computer, you pathetic desperate people. If your kid is good scouts will find them. You posting on here ripping a kid or proclaiming your kid is better wont change a WHL scouts or GM's opinions. Give it a rest. Most you" parents" probably never in your life even put a pair of skates on, but you're all experts on the game, when you can hide behind your computer. Get a life, because even if your kid is the superstar you make him out to be chances are he'll probably never even play in the WHL. Let the kids play and enjoy the game...

I was at both big tournaments,st albert and med hat, travelled to the Alberta allstar game and have watched Notre Dame, and all the other academy's from bc play. Without making excuses for any players of all the games I saw, there was one player that stood out in every game Clague hands down everytime I saw him play. Someone tell me a specific time when different I will learn something....Some of the other top kids spoke of they will do great if there are no corners in the future rink they are playing in! You know who those players are and I am not sure the scouts are not timimg how fast they can skate out of the corner as to avoid any contact. Not sure on the BWC hype...for such a recruited team you can play the same hockey in alot of smaller area's? If you moved there from Alberta for any academy team you would have to say to yourself man all we did for that? Sure most parents like having there kids around at home at 14???? Think Northshore has it figured out great players and depth. Some of the 6' kids that everyone is so excited about what would the smaller player's that compete with them now and are better than some of these players look like with that size. Assuming they will grow that is going to be awesome to see.....

Too many comments are a little too critical of the kids. They read this too.
The scouts are trying to guess where these kids are going to be in two or three years. It doesn't matter what round a kid goes in. What team, what organization, coaching, development etc are more important than this or that kid going in the top ten, or the first round.
Opinions are fine, but some of the comments are a little out there. How about rooting for all the kids regardless of where they get drafted. By the way Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadians is 5'8"

Bang on. Wish there was a "like" button such as on Facebook. You have it totally pegged. Well done. Your kid is lucky to have a dad like you!!!!

I would like to know more about the Calgary teams is, there should be one or more Calgary based players on this list.

There are more and more smaller guys in whl every year mindsets are changing here are a few 5ft 8/9 guys that were considered to small Petan Liepsic Point shincarak to name a few all small in bantam Point dratted at 5ft4 and Petan 5ft5 in first rd so dont worry if your good they will take you

I am not a doctor (I don't even play one on TV), but I believe boys generally continue to grow until at least 18 years of age. That's point 1.

I know parentage can be a good indication of projected height, but even that indication tends to get exceeded these days due to exceptional healthcare and nutrition. My nephew, for instance, is now 6' 4" (at 22 years old) while his Father is just 5' 8" and his mother is 5' 6". That's point 2.

Point 3? Have fun!

The bantam draft actually means nothing. Nothing at all. All you overlooked parents out there should take a look in the mirror and try to find out what the hell is wrong with you.
